It does really well with some dry pine I had in my fire pit pile. However, I tried using it on a small 3 1/2" or so diameter piece of something else, oak maybe. The splitter would go about 1/2" in and come to a stop with a DeWalt 20v drill. I tried a Ryobi corded hammer drill and got stuck about the same depth. I tried another spot a couple inches from one end and got the drill to hammer through it but the drill was starting to smoke a bit. I think my experience was about what I've seen watching videos of these products in times past. Perhaps using in a heavier hammer drill would be better than a homeowner grade unit. Although I think that's the purpose of the product is for homeowner/camper type use. I'll give it a 3 because it's not a complete failure and it does work, just not as effective as I'd like.

Well I wanted to believe, but I'm afraid this is not going to work for me. When I use my drill with this the drill stops when the tip is 1/2" into the wood. It also yanks the piece of wood out of your hand while you're trying to hold it steady and use the drill.Unless you are literally peeling off tiny slices for kindling, like they show in the product photos, you aren't going to be happy with this product. I couldn't get it to work at all. Maybe I'm old school, but this experience just confirms that a nice splitting maul is the best way to split wood.
