Standard mountain handlebars come in 31.8mm or 35mm at the center, where the stem attaches the bars to the steerer. This clamp is large because it's designed to install right next to the stem. If you want a clamp to be out by your grips, you'll need a clamp designed for 22.2mm width (which is the same no matter if your bars have 35mm or 31.8mm stem clamp diameter).

I bought this to install my Sram Eagle shifter on drop bars and it worked perfectly. Much cheaper than the Paul option.
