This reel is sturdy and light weight. The advantage to one like this over a geared reel is that it is light enough to hang on a step-in post or on the electric fence. You won't need a separate bracket to hang on a t post or wood post. The biggest flaw is the plastic tab that lock the reel. It will become brittle and break where you pull it. This has happened to every single reel I bought. I've been able to use pliers to pull the tabs for a while, but eventually the nub wears down and there isn't anything to grab on to. I'm surprised that Gallager hasn't found a solution to this. It seems obvious that the locking tab should be stronger.

Good small reel. Rather over-priced though.

I bought these for weekly fence moves with my sheep. I set up a larger area with electric nets and then subdivide the paddock with a couple of strands of electric tape. A 1320 ft half inch hot tape roll fit perfectly between 2 of these. They roll up easily enough and are light enough that i can hang them from step-in posts. A geared design would be nice, but for the price, and the weight (that's a huge factor, anything much heavier would require much more robust posts and for my extremely temporary paddocks, it's not worth the effort), they're wonderful. They've handled a drop or two without breaking, i'd buy these again in a heartbeat.

I purchased several of these and at first they worked well. After a few weeks the small plastic plunger that hold the reel still popped off of most of them. Now I use a knife to reach in and pry the plunger up so that I can reel or release wire.
