Gates says the belt might be too short because of the AC compressor being replaced with an aftermarket that has a larger pulley. Mine was original. The fix for this gates says is to buy two different idler pulleys that are a few millimeters smaller in diameter. I got mine installed by rolling the belt on at the crankshaft pulley. After it was on there was still some deflection at the loaded idler. I believe it will be fine as all belts stretch. Definitely no belt slip anymore!!

I could not get the belt to fit onto the pulleys supplied in this kit. Footnote in the instructions said that if A/C compressor or alternator had been replaced with non OEM parts that you may need to purchase a smaller diameter pulley (Gates 38008) for the idler. Since "most" of these older vehicles have probably had either the alt or A/C compressor replaced, I'd suggest purchasing the Gates 38008 pulley when you purchase this kit. I put the old belt, tensioner & idler back on & ordered the smaller idler pulley. It arrived 2 days later. Installation was a breeze with this pulley installed. Kit works as designed now.

One detail that isn't included in the product description is that the pulleys are made of plastic, not metal, so I don't know how durable they'd be in the long term. However, it seems to be a high impact plastic that should hold up for a long time. Other than that this system worked very well as a replacement for the original serpentine belt and pulleys on my van (1993 Dodge Caravan with the 3.3L engine). Getting at the back side of where they mount requires taking off the intake plenum, although I already had that off for some other repair work so it's not like I had to go out of my way to install this kit. Once in place the belt rides smooth and quiet, and considering how tight the belt is when slipping it on over the last pulley I know there's no way it would ever pop off due to running through snow drifts in the winter like the old one did many times.Unfortunately, the transmission gave out before I ever got that chance to test it! Anybody want to buy a used Gates 38398K V-belt kit? Not a whole lot of miles on it!

I found this after throwing the belt on my '94 voyager far too frequently. It consists of an idler pulley with bolt and cover, a tensioner without a new nut, and the double sided V belt.I pulled the old belt off and compared.. the new double sided belt is just a tad smaller than the old belt. Could be due to stretching.I then went to work removing the old tensioner. This was a pain. I first tried from underneath but had no combination of extensions and wobble bits that would allow me to get a socket wrench on the nut solidly. I then tried from above. Loosening the alternator bolt, then swinging the alternator back allowed the nut to be visible. I then removed the two 1/4" nuts holding the power steering reservoir and gently moved the reservoir so I could get better access with my arm. Using good lighting and an open ended wrench, was able to get the nut unscrewed. To break the nut I free sprayed with PB Blaster then I used a 15mm open end wrench on the nut. I needed to use another wrench on the 15mm wrench as a knuckle-buster for the first break. Then slowly backed the screw out with the 15mm open end, flipping after each small turn of 15 degrees as there isn't much swinging room.Putting the new tensioner on was the same process in reverse. It helped to place the tensioner nut on the closed end wrench, oriented such the the thread would grab the tensioner. Finding this orientation on the tensioner before installing it on the mount then marking it on the nut helped to get it threaded, after failing about a dozen times by not doing so. Then I tighened up the nut, 15 degrees at a time. The idler pulley was straightforward and quick. Just remove the old, replace the new, with the dust shield on the outside using a 15mm socket.Placing the new belt on was painless as well. I assumed the side with the markings was the outer side. I installed from underneath, after removing the splash guard (four 3/8" bolts). I threaded it through all the accessory pulleys except the harmonic balancer, then pulled the tensioner down using a 15mm wrench and a breaker bar, then slipped the belt over the harmonic balancer.Turned the engine on, and the belt worked great. No more chirping or squealing either. I took a pint glass of water and poured it on the belt. Normally this would cause the old belt to launch. The new belt just sprayed the water off, no noise, no slipping. Impressive
