The optical is the same stereo signal as the 3.5mm jack. I was hoping to get 5.1 output (like HDMI will give). For what it is, it is good. Feels good, not like an empty plastic shell on a string like some usb adapters do.

I've got this connecting my MacBook Pro to a pair of Kanto speakers that have optical inputs. Sound is great, and I was able to test up to 24 bit/192 kHz. Works and doesn't break the bank.

This product was supposed to be the answer to my Minidisc isn't recording analog LOUD enough. I started to get the one with just 3.5mm but I thought what if that sounds just as low?? I figured this "dual" device would do the trick. Sorta. My laptop has no optical. I plug this into it's USB and the lights appear! I got ZILCH from trying the optical with adapters and various other optical cords. Not sure why this device states it dies something IT CANNOT?? My Minidisc recognized I was connected to an optical line BUT, The process would end there bc their was "No Signal" to recognized and recorded.? Although recording through the 3.5mm yielded better results.! The sound was about 20-30% louder than regular 3.5mm also sounded Brighter, and very "digitized"... the bass was balanced but I'm a fan of thick and rich analog bass. Which was what I was hoping to get a digital recording of... The search continues for and optical home Minidisc Recording.. Remember to change your Sound Output to USB... if you try.
