It's just not user friendly with the screen on the tester. I ended up chosing one that had the screen seperate from the tester ... one the screens bigger and its easier to read because of this, has more settings than this one and could be calibrated ... this one says it can be but it just resets itself to default after you do one test. Annoying imo.

Sufficiently accurate hardness testing with such a compact, and easy to use product FOR THIS PRICE, that is quite something! Read and stick to the instructions.

We stamp and cold form steel sheets. I was looking for a hardness tester to test incoming steel for conformity, as well as materials that seem harder when run through our machines. This thing was all over the place, no matter which steel material or scale I tried to utilize. I verified its inaccuracy with a Wilson Instruments hardness tester and test block. About the only thing I could get consistent measurements on was the HRC scale, and even then it was off by 5-10%. It's cheap for a reason I suppose. I missed the 30 day return policy.

So you'll have to use this with caution, as in my case. I collect a lot knives and like to test to see if the hardness rating is near where the manufacturer claims. This is especially important from the lower end of the cost spectrum for knife steel, with claims made for labeled knife steel for durability. I was able to try this out on some blanks and was very easy to figure out, even with the bad instructions. I no longer have to check using the filing method, which can leave an unsightly visible mark. This tool does still leave a small dimple/ nick on the surface though, so use this with discretion in a less conspicuous area of your project/ test piece. This arrived with no charge in it, so I do have some concerns with the battery being not accessible or replaceable if it goes bad, since it seems it may have discharged on it's own after manufacturing. I'll monitor this over the next few months, but it did come to a full charge after about half an hour. This measuring tool DOES have AUTO POWER OFF after about 2-3 minutes. The OLED display is very easy to read with a pretty useful menu for testing and calibrating with memory for saving averaged readings. There's two languages for this and I clicked it to see what languages were offered, but I found out the hard way LOL. It went straight to Chinese as soon as I clicked on "language", so I had to use my google translator camera on my phone to detect and translate the menu. So Just a tip, do you click language if you can read English, or you'll have a little adventure trying to sift through the menu if you don't have google translate on your smart phone!Other than the quirky menu and instructions with tiny text, the quality of the tool is of very good quality and the protective case is a Pelican style clamshell with room to store and protect the measuring tool and the charging bits, along with the additional test probe and a cleaning brush to keep the delicate insides free of debris for getting correct measurements.

This hardness tester is definitely interesting. It takes some getting used to and you have to refer to the Internet to understand what the hardness is supposed to be of the materials that you were testing and less you are stooped in the knowledge of hardness testing lol.

I wanted something for testing metals for machineability without a testing file set. This was reading steel coupons as very low, and almost out of range on the HL scale. It just showed a down arrow when I tried changing the unit scale to hrc. I got the same results with steel and forged steel settings. This is not usable.
