The Griffith’s Gnat is a versatile fly fishing midge pattern that can be used year-round. It is a tiny, natural-colored fly that is sometimes described as a smaller or (micro) woolly bugger. It is designed to imitate midges (small flies) but also imitates most tiny insects that you would find on the water’s surface. This fly attracts all types of trout and panfish (which is no surprise given how buggy it looks). It is best fished on calm waters as the grizzly hackle provides buoyancy allowing it to float high on the water’s surface. The hackle also provides some movement that imitates legs or wings. It is recommended to carry this in at least two sizes. Size #16 which imitates a midge cluster and size #20 which imitates a single midge.
