Guitars i've purchased recently have needed some attention on the frets to make them easier to play. This leveler makes the job of leveling the frets much easier and accurate.

I have used it on a few projects now and I can say that it has worked PERFECTLY 100% of the time. Great tool, and not just for the price.

Great tool, it would seem that they have addressed the issue with the covers extending too far because mine were perfect. it's completely level and flat with no high or low spots. Well built and will last for years.

I'm slowly making my way towards becoming a luthier (my retirement plan, ha!), acquiring tools and knowledge and experience. I actually did a fret leveling job a while back using a similar item that was aluminum, and it did the job adequately, as I'm sure this leveling beam would as well. But at this price, you have to weigh your options a little...This doesn't look "precision ground", but it might be incredibly flat, I honestly haven't put a straightedge on it. The first big problem lies in the "protective" plastic caps on the ends. On the short sides of the beam I received, they don't stick out past the edge of the steel beam and wouldn't be a problem, but if you tried to use the wide 2" sides (which are questionably useful anyway on a radiused fretboard), the plastic hangs over the edge on one side and might need some leveling of its own. The plastic caps also protrude on the corners. You're better off pulling out the plastic caps and doing a little filing on the edges of the beam (of course it's cheaper from a manufacturing standpoint to just put plastic caps on it and call it good). These edges are rough cut and it wouldn't hurt to have them tapered a little. If you have one fretboard to level and don't have any plans of ever doing it again, this leveling beam will do the job adequately (minus the plastic caps) and comes with the stick-on sandpaper strips to do the job. If you think you might do this to a few instruments, you might be better off spending just a little more money for a quality sanding beam from Stewart MacDonald and a few rolls of Stikit abrasive. You might even consider upgrading to a radiused sanding beam, especially if you have multiple fretboards with the same radius. It will do the job. I hovered between 3 and 4 stars, but if you just want a catch-all kit to do one fret leveling job, this will do it, although you might want a good crowning file and some fret erasers to finish the job, so don't forget that. With a little care (and a Sharpie), you can do any fretboard radius with this. I'm sure I'll get some use out of it, and I do like the stainless steel better than the aluminum beam I used previously. The weight does some of the work for you! Now, if you want to level frets with the strings on, there are other tools for that....
