Yes, I am the kind of weird person that has a collection of sample elements. Indium has some interesting properties that make it fun to play with; I won't quote the wiki back to you. The sample I received is accurately weighed and behaves as I would expect indium to behave.

You read that right, a while ago I saw a video from Vsauce actually chewing pure indium. When I saw this I had to try it out myself. I can not recommend anyone else do this but it is a really wild experience to feel the metallic structure collapse between your teeth.

This indium metal button is a very neat object on its own as a specimen. It is the softest metal I have ever encountered. A fingernail easily creates an indentation and a ballpoint pen will "engrave" the surface with ease (see photo). It is easily cut if smaller quantities are needed for melting/alloying or for scientific applications (although I do not have the means to confirm its purity). I received slightly over the advertised weight. At the time of this review the price is ~$31 USD for the 28.3g button. This price seems comparable to other sources I have come across. I have not yet melted any but am planning to use this nugget to create a Bismuth-Indium-Tin alloy.

On the one hand, this is exactly what it says it is - a hemispherical dollop of Indium, perfect for whatever possible needs you could have (my plan was to use it for scientific demonstrations). However, when you have something this simple, you have to judge it by the value you're getting. And that being the case, this isn't worth it. The product listing very clearly says that you're getting 1.0oz or 28.3 grams, but what actually arrived was 0.985 ounces, or 27.9g. (I used a *very* accurate coffee scale.)Now, this by itself isn't a huge issue, as you're talking about a discrepancy of 1.4%. However, at the current price ($30.98 at the time of this review), you're paying an over 50% markup on the normal market value of Indium, even for non-bulk orders. The only thing I can see with this that changes the value is the hemispherical design, so if having that shape is worth the premium you're paying on this, go for it. If you just care about the metal, though, there are cheaper options out there.

If you have homeschooling kids like us, these are great investments to make. It's an investment for your children to learn real world materials and this metal makes science much more fun for the kids! It's one thing to learn about metals in a book, it's another to actually be able to hold and play with them. They remember better when it's tactile experience rather than just reading about it! Even if not for homeschooling, let your kids explore!Great addition in the home science lab. They even remember when friends or family come over and they show how the metal works, impressing others. Indium metal is the only metal that can be played with no serious danger around it other than it being heavy and falling on your toes.

Weight on mine came in at 28.17g, less than half a percent underweight, which I find acceptable. Appearance, density and softness are consistent with indium metal (I don't have facilities for chemical analysis). My sample has a crease or furrow around most of its diameter, as though it had been poured in two stages. This shouldn't affect use, but it wouldn't make a very attractive display piece. This should be fine for making low-melting alloys or soldering to glass/ceramic.

I plan to use this blob to calibrate a laser oblation element analyzer on a microscope. This is a perfect size for the analyzer, or anyone that needs to small but effective amount of a pure metal often used in electronics. (Indium is used in LEDs and displays to make clear but conductive circuit traces on glass displays).Yes, I recommend this product. It is very similar to Nickel.

If you want a quick display specimen, this indium hemisphere may be a good option. However, if you plan to use it for a science experiment or for an actual project, I don't think the (geometric) shape it arrives in really matters.Even if displaying it, the metal is so soft it is easily disfigured, so it couldn't really be handled or manipulated. Also, as you can see from the pictures, it isn't boxed in a particularly gift-able way; it's just a plain cardboard box with bubble wrap inside. There may be particular times that this product is useful, but overall, if it's going to be touched or used in any way, it's not necessarily ideal to pay more per ounce just because it arrives as a hemisphere.
