I acquired these for holding various food items for either kaiseki style meals associated with the "tea ceremony" or recreating honzen style meals of premodern Japan. They are quite serviceable faux lacquerware for this purpose. Their 7cm diameter appears to match the size of similar dishes appearing in Yama no Uchi Ryōri-sho. Their color pretty well matches both the black and vermillion found in real lacquerware. Yes, the difference is perceptible if you have experience with real lacquerware, but few users of Japanese dinnerware have experience with real lacquerware. The durability is what you would expect of melamine which has long been used by restaurants.

Use these for wet food for my cats....they don't get a ton a one time, so these are perfect. They are lightweight so the cats move them around a bit, but their shape means I don't have leftover bits in the crevice at the bottom that's present in most 'pet bowls.' They are sturdy and clean well in dishwasher. Rare these days that I don't feel overcharged for the quality I got...this one of the exceptions!

These look very good on your table. Very solid. I bought for a party. They all “mysteriously” disappeared. Everybody liked them. Good value (except for the theft)
