I bought this for the 2024 solar eclipse. I did not want to spend a lot because the weather is iffy and it may end up being cloudy on the day of. I have been using it to photograph sunspots.

I haven't used this for other photography yet, but I did use it to capture the eclipse. It was so effective at blocking the rays that I had to overexpose quite a bit in photoshop to see the outline of the sun. It did great on the non-total eclipse shots.

This ND filter is a lot of fun to play with. It's extraordinarily dark, and that opens up possibilities for some really cool images that wouldn't otherwise be possible to photograph.The build quality of the filter is very good, it threads easily into 77mm filter threads.The level of density this provides allows you to photograph subjects that would not normally be able to be observed- things like the surface of LEDs, the surface of molten metal, and other extraordinarily bright subjects.I tried to use my camera to see if there was any color cast from this filter, but due to the amount of darkening it provides, there was no calibrated light source that I could use both with this filter and with the unfiltered lens.This is a great tool for pushing the bounds of what it is possible to photograph. It is too dark for most uses, but if you need something rated for this low amount of light transmission, this is the right tool.

Optically this filter is sharp and it does give you pretty close to 16.5 stops of light reduction. My copy was more like 16 stops but for a filter this price with sharp optics I'm not going to complain about half of a stop.There is a very significant blue/green color shift with this filter. When testing the filter and comparing it to an identical shot without the filter on, I had to increase the temperature by 1400 Kelvins and add +26 magenta to get the colors to match in Lightroom. As long as you are shooting RAW, the filter does seem to color-correct fine, but such a drastic color shift is worth noting.The threads on the filter are decent. They seem pretty good for the price, but I'd still be a little careful with them as they are aluminum. They are definitely a noticeable step up from some of the poorly machined threads I've found on other budget filters though.Overall, this is a very good filter at this price point.
