The design has changed substantially from the last ones I ordered 5-6 years ago. I noted someone else has the same review and problem that I have and I will copy that person's review below. The older version I had opened wide enough at the bottom to create more stability to hold the instrument. I just ordered 8 of these for a music project and now I must return all 8 because the bottom/base does not open wide enough to create a stability for the instrument. It is a marked difference from the version of this product that I bought pre-2019. I really liked the previous version of the stand and am sad that this version doesn't work for me any longer. Now I have to look for a different brand. Here's what the other guy below said and describes my experience too:Not sturdy for an instrumentI bought this stand because I loved my original Ingles stand that I purchased back in 2016 and recently bought a second violin. The build quality leaves a bit to be desired. Yes, it's the same shape and general design but compared to my 2016 stand, this one has legs that are far narrower and the legs of the stand collapse by picking the item up. That should never happen with an instrument stand. My 2016 Ingles stand provides sturdiness for both my oblong and shaped cases as well as instruments, and the only way to collapse it is by pressing the legs together. The new design is a costly accident waiting to happen and is a fail on the part of the manufacturer. Go back to original design. No one wants to put a valuable instrument on something that might fall over from a sneeze.

This is my favorite violin/viola stand. It's adjustable and sturdy. It also fits easily into a gear bag when compressed for size.

This stand is awesome! It fits my 15.5 inch viola perfectly, and it holds my bow high enough off the table. It is so easy to pick up my instrument and play whenever I feel like it. Before, I would have to take my viola out of the case, put the shoulder rest on, unclip my bow and tighten it. Now, I don't have to go through all of that; I can just pick it up and play! The shoulder rest can be left on the instrument, and the clip at the top is secure. It is very sturdy as it doesn't wobble. It doesn't tip over when my viola is in it. I love it. It is very high quality and well worth the price!

The stand is fine for my son's violin, including with the chin rest still attached. Some reviews had said that two hands are needed to put the violin on the stand or to take it off the stand, since the retaining clasp at the neck does not operate automatically. But even with the bow in one hand, the other hand is still free to put the violin on the stand and then to close the retaining clasp. When taking the violin off the stand, the process is reversed, you first swing the retaining clasp up and to the right and then with the same hand remove the violin. Also, the hanger for the bow is sufficiently long that the bow tip does not touch the floor.Having the violin visible and easily accessible makes it easy for my son to start practicing and saves time at the beginning and the end of practice sessions, since there is no need to take the violin out fo the case and then later put it away again.

This stand is both heavy duty, and also quite heavy. There is no danger of this stand being easily knocked over. The weight of the stand and stability of the base, along with the overall design and construction, are quite impressive. It has what appears to be a rugged, powder coated finish. As advertised, it will hold your instrument without having to remove the shoulder rest, should you use one. There is a heavy duty plastic lever that swings down over the neck yoke. This keeps the instrument securely locked into the stand. The lever is easily operated with one hand. The lever is placed such that it is easiest to use with your right hand, which is perfect, allowing you to grab the instrument with your left.My only complaint would be that it is low to the ground (just as it appears in the photo). Because of this, you probably don't want to leave it standing alone in the middle of an open area, where someone could trip over it. I use two if these when playing, and keep them right near my music and mic stands, so that they will not be able to get tripped over.

I purchased this item for myself. I am playing the violin just for fun. I have a very busy life that sometimes I find it time consuming to practice because of the steps to take before I can start like opening the case, setting up, etc...Since I received the Ingles violin stand, it made practicing very convenient. The violin is just right there set-up and ready to play anytime. I do not have to remove the shoulder rest either. It seems secure but it's too light. I am concerned that the whole stand with the violin can easily be knocked out. I do not like the locking mechanism of this stand. One has to manually open and lock. One step more to do and forget. It is not as handy for packing compared to the Hercules Travelite stand which I also purchased fr Amazon. I wish it would come with a small tray attached to the stand to hold the rosin and a durable water resistant carrying bag. It is adjustable which means it can grow with the violin size. I should have found out about this when my children were younger. It may have motivated them to practice more because it wouldn't take much set up time. Suggest to buy esp those with little children!
