Product Description

Binchotan (Japanese Oak) Charcoal is known as the best quality charcoal, activated through an extremely high burning temperature and a rapid cooling process. Binchotan (or sometimes written as "binchoutan") is all natural and does not contain chemicals. This means high heat preserves the flavorful juices, gives a good sear, and makes anything barbecued absolutely delicious. The longer pieces also mean longer burning times. These sticks are restuarant-grade and are used when making traditional Japanese Yakatori. Made in the Kishu region in Japan. Since this is a natural product, the length and diameter will vary from piece to piece - Aprx length: 5.5 - 6" and Aprx Diameter: 0.6 - 0.8"

Important Usage Instructions:

  • Use charcoal chimney to light the charcoal.
  • Please ensure that a spark arrestor or a spark screen is placed on top of the chimney.
  • Sparks and small pieces of charcoal may pop out of the chimney.
  • Ensure area surrounding the chimney (about 3 feet) is open and free of objects and people.
  • Do not use water to extinguish the charcoal. Instead, cut off the oxygen supply to the charcoal and let it cool.
  • Charcoal that is not completely burned can be reused again, provided that it is stored properly.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid direct sunlight.

Other than the cost, this is beautiful binchotan - the real stuff. We have a yakitori grill and every few weeks we skew up chicken parts, onions, etc - the smell of yakitori over this charcoal and flavors this imparts are sublime.

I was ready to use my authentic Japanese binchoton charcoal when I picked up the box it just felt a little light. So I put it on a postal scale and it was almost 1 full lb. short of 5lbs. So if you do the math with tax that’s roughly $23 a lb. Buyer beware make sure you weigh your charcoal my gut tells me....I had to return my order.
