These can only be turned on/off by remote, there is not a switch on the unit. So you will still need batteries for the remote.

This was a birthday gift for my 12 year old granddaughter. She absolutely loves it. Her mom hung it on her bedroom wall for her. She has 2 cats who are going crazy chasing all the colored lights around the room!

I had this for 3 weeks excited for my grandbaby to get here so I could use it, turned it on once while she was here and it quit working within 2 hours. You could see the mechanism going but no lights worked.

This product is pretty underwhelming. The lights are harsh and don’t radiate very far without blurring. Definitely not as nice as it looks in the picture.
