This is an interesting filter that really does make stars pop in your photos. I think it is on the pricey side for what it does, but it is fun to play with for sure.

Kase filters are the choice of many professional photographers, including me and come highly recommended. They're "the brand to beat" when it comes to quality optical filters and I own many of them. This AstroBlast filter has been designed to enhance nighttime views of the stars by slightly brightening the brightest stars so they stand out more prominently - while leaving the dimmer stars alone.I don't notice a huge difference when using the filter; its effect is minor in my opinion. But that was the intent, I believe. Just a slight enhancement of a constellation.

I recommend also getting the filter holder if you don't have one.

I gave it 4 stars because I don’t feel like it’s worth $200 but it did the job. The image i captured with it is a single exposure image. No stacking in photoshop. I didnt mount it to the lens with the adapter I just wave it in front of the lens while my shutter is open that way I can control how intense the glow is. It definitely made the brighter stars glow and stand out. It also is a learning experience. At the time of this review I’ve only used it once. Look forward to use it again.

I have other Kase filters and love them however I am quite disappointed in the Astro filter. While the filter appears to be well made, the results from using the Astra filter were far from satisfactory. I was photographing the Milky Way, something I am very experienced in doing and upon reviewing my images, a number of the stars seem to have a strong magenta color cast and were not sharp. I was photographing with another friend who is also a photographer and he had also purchased this filter and we both had similar results.

Star bloat was as expected, but if your lens has any aberration, it makes it worse. You can also get the same effect in Photoshop.

It brought out the brighter stars to hilight the night sky. Like the way they look.
