The tips are threaded with spiral cutting edges along the shafts. Once the threaded tip is started in the wood, the shaft is pulled deeper with no further pressure required. The cutting edges pare away the wood and pull the waste out through the entry hole. This is an 7 piece set made by the French firm Arno. Sizes ranging from 2 to 5 mm or roughly 1/16" to 3/16". They can be used for screws from #2 through #11. Tips are hardened. Black finish. Made in France.

Handy devices to start a hole for a wood screw. Bought a set of three from a different place years ago and only had one left. Use these things several times a year

Love using these gimlets. They are sharp, straight and I can make perfect holes without either of my drills.

I used the smallest drill to drill a drain hole in my car's thick plastic headlights. It's so thin and frail looking I was expecting it to snap off any second as I fumbled in an awkward position to twist the wire-thin giblet. It took a long time, but it drilled the hole and didn't bend or break; despite my fumbling twisting. It was exhausting, but nothing else would have worked in that tiny cramped space I was working in.

Looks well made, was able to make holes in plywood. I am deducting 1 star because they arrived coated with a sticky grease and covered in lint and fur. Had to clean. Not a nig deal, but I did look at under a magnifying glass to ensure they didn't appear used.

This is my second time ordering a set of these. The first time I gave a few of the larger sizes away as gifts to other Bushcrafters (and kept the largest for myself). That broke up my set, and I later decided that I wanted a complete set for my personal BC tool kit. These twist gimlets are simple tools that simply do what they're advertised to do - they make holes, nuthin' fancy, just holes.I haven't broken one yet; but I stick mostly to the thicker gimlets for most wood work. If I do manage to break one of the thinner ones one day, I would still give the product 5 stars. You just have to expect that thin drill bits will eventually break - no matter how careful you are with them - especially when twisting by hand. However, the thicker gimlets are pretty much bomb proof.

We had these in our toolbox when I was a child. It’s a great low key product to get a job done. Our reliance on power tools will be our downfall. This set does everything you need unless you build a house.

Before I saw these I thought a gimlet was some sort of mixed drink😊. I bought this set a few weeks ago because I was having problems with small brass screws having their heads break off during installation even after I drilled pilot holes. Once these arrived, I started using these to produce the pilot holes and they work great. The smallest size works for the tiny brass screws supplied with miniature brass hinges which are only about a ¼” long. Haven’t had cause to use the largest versions in the kit and I’m guessing they might be a little harder to use in hard woods, but overall, these will fill an important role in my woodworking shop going forward.
