Product Description

One Quart Filter Kit -- Designed for Small Batch Maple Syrup Making!

This kit was created with the home sugarmaker in mind. Includes two one-quart, lightweight prefilters (use for collecting sap and mid-boil filtering) and one one-quart thick, heavy-duty filter for use during the final boiling stage. All filters have pre-cut slits and fit into most standard sieve stands. Also includes a handy instruction card. This is a must-have for making pure maple syrup and is an easy step to ensure syrup stays clear.

Why Filter Maple Sap and Syrup?

As maple sap boils down into maple syrup, the natural minerals become concentrated and form cloudy or chunky sediment called niter (or sugar sand). This is perfectly edible but can affect the taste and appearance of syrup. Luckily, it’s easily removed by a quick filter when collecting and then twice during the boiling process.

Why Use One-Quart Filters?

Most filters on the market are designed for big sugarmaking operations and are difficult to use by yourself as a home sugarmaker. So we’ve created a smaller, one-quart filter kit that fits most standard sieve stands; comes with pre-cut slits so you can securely balance it; and is just the right size to handle a home-sized batch of syrup. These are the filters we use ourselves!

How To Filter Maple Sap and Syrup.

From tree to table, sap is filtered three times. Each step is simple but necessary as it removes sugar sand from syrup, creating a tasty and clearer end product.

Step One: Daily Sap Filter

Each day pour collected sap through the light filter to remove debris. Keep filtered sap chilled until ready to boil.

Step Two: Mid-Boil Filter

Once sap reaches the 216°F range, run it through the lighter prefilter to remove the majority of sugar sand. Typically, sugarmakers suspend this filter over the finishing pot and pour it directly through. That pot can then be put directly on the stove for the final boil. Remember: handle with care, sap is hot!!

Step Three: Final Filter

For this last step, suspend the lightweight prefilter inside the heavier filter and place over a clean pot. When syrup reaches its finished temperature, pour through this two-stage filter into waiting bottles or jars. Syrup will drain through quickly but sugar sand will be trapped in the filters.

Washable and Reusable

After filtering, rinse all filters with hot water only (no dishsoap or laundry detergent). Do not wring or twist as this can stretch the fibers and cause the filter to lose its shape. Hang to dry. With proper care, filters are reusable for many seasons.

Now you get to enjoy and share your gorgeous pure maple syrup!

Arrived quickly and as described. I can normally get about a quart to a quart and a half of filtering before I have to change out the heavy filter (depending on how much sugar sand is in the batch) Just rinse thoroughly with hot water and air dry and they’re ready to be reused!

If you are starting out on maple syrup, you will find that you cannot have too many filters. The inner one will clog quickly. The thicker/outer/support cone will be more clogged than it looks like it is. They need drying time after washing. The really cheap ones tear apart easily. This is a small set, but it works. We only tap 10 trees, but these filters will last at least two seasons.

Works well for smaller batches. Next year I do plan on purchasing two more pre-filters to make the whole process easier. As the pre-filter gets dirty it slows down filtration. The result is that you then need to reheat the syrup after filtration. Having more pre-filters will make it so that you can remove and replace the pre-filter without the need to wash out filters in the middle of the batch.

Prefilters work great for both filtering harvesting debris and removing sugar sand from the first boil. You need to take care to rinse them thoroughly right after use. Do not allow the mineral deposits to stay inside the filter as it will make them impossible to clean. Did not use the finishing the filter because I am collecting very small batches of sap and am using a smaller filtering system.

I've used coffee filters and a filter sold by tap my trees. The pre filters on these are comparable to those type of filter but the felt filter is the real deal. No more nitro. Clear syrup. Im happy with this purchase and its not one of the huge orlon filters. Cleaned up nice. I simply disposed of the prefilters.

4th year sapping and this filtering system was a wonderful upgrade. I've tried several different methods including a few homeaid contraptions but none compaired. Simple and clear instructions. Filtered around 4 gallons of syrup and was left with nothing but a beautifully clear/amber color 100% free of visible particles. Very durable. Washed it and put it away for next year.

Works well for filtering syrup! I used a paper filter for intermediate stages of boiling. Used both paper and felt for final boil. If you have a lot of niter it will filter slowly. I used a chopstick to stir things up in the filter and that helped get it moving again. Be sure to filter when syrup is hot!if you have a lot of niter, you won't have clear syrup without a good filter, so it is well worth the effort. I like how it's nice and small, fits in a regular jelly stand for a home set up.Have rinsed the paper filter many times and while it's decidedly thinner but it's still working well.

Sturdy, well made, nice sized, no noticeable lint shedding....does the job nicely. Make sure to buy the cone wire frame to hold these cone filters in place over most any size pots or buckets for a one man operation. These filters can even be doubled for a better finer filtering, and they fit well into the cone wire frame, and while you are at it, you may want to pick up some of those other cheaper household cone filters, and you can use them with the cone wire frame too....good for straining your home cooking oil, and other things in the kitchen and around the house.

Filter kit arrived earlier than expected. Does an excellent job. I think it was overpriced considering it just a sewed felt cone and a couple of paper filters. Will be looking for a better deal in future.

Crucial tool for home Maple Sugaring process. Prior to purchase, we tried using coffee filters & cheese cloth and ran into too much trouble. These filters, in addition to the metal filter holder/stand, we got crystal clear maple syrup. So worth it! The amount of niter sugar sand caught with these filters is amazing. Didn't even know it was all there until we filtered. Use 1 thin filter during mid-boil, and then double up the 2nd thin filter with the thick filter for the final process. Did it's job beautifully.
