Works perfect. I opted to spend the little extra to get the factory part. Took about 20 min of I install. Remove back cover. Remove three screw in the handle. Remove two screws on bottom and up top for side cover. Pop side cover off. Remove the pilot assembly. Connect new thermocouple to switch and igniter wire to new assembly. Re assemble. Easy job.

Was absolutely a nightmare to replace. My dad still has the heater in parts on his work bench trying to fix it.

My Mr. Heater Big Buddy stopped working, most instructions said to clean out the flameport but that didn't help, so this was the next step. On replacement it worked perfectly.Steps1. Remove 2 screws holding the cover in the bottom (pic 1), it then tilts down for removal. Apparently older units don't have that, so this could be hard for those.2. Disconnect the sensor from the switch on the side (pic 2). It's a bit recessed, so pliers will help.3. Pull out the ignitor cable (pic 3 #2).4. Disconnect the gas brass coupling, you'll need a 12mm wrench or pliers (pic 3 #3).5. Remove screw (pic 3 #4) from the bracket.6. Rotate the top towards you to remove the assembly, this was the only fidgity step.7. You need to reuse the bracket, so replace the old assembly with the new one using the two screws.8. To reinstall, just do the reverse. Note that the ignitor cable just "stabs" onto the pointy prong that probably stabbed your finger at some point.Note that there was an extra sensor included, it was not needed on the BigBuddy.

After reading reviews, I decided to try this to replace the pilot assembly on my Portable buddy even though its for the big buddy as it was cheaper and faster shipping. replaced the part and it works great.

My old pilot got weaker and weaker over time till it wouldn't stay lit anymore despite me cleaning it and running a q-tip through it and made my big buddy inoperable. This made it perfect again. But it is a sob to install. Getting the physical pilot assembly in place is the easy part. Connecting the pilot sensing wire is the impossible part. The entire heater uses a unibody type assembly like a small vehicle. Putting it back together gets even more difficult if even the slightest thing gets bent. I couldn't find any YouTube videos to take it apart either. I ended up cracking one of the ceramic heating elements. Still using said element but I'll have to replace that too at some point

Update: my heater now usually shuts off completely when I push down the control knob to turn it down from the high setting. I can restart it the usual way but when it's hot I have always had to tip the unit forward to get the burner to ignite.Older comments:Older units do not have the removable panel on the bottom giving access to the pilot assembly. As such it's necessary to remove the back, both sides and then to separate the steel chassis from the front panel. This latter is quite difficult. Mine required a hole be drilled in the bottom panel directly opposed to the pilot bracket mounting screw, removing the screw to separate the pilot assembly from the front panel assembly and then removing the two burner inserts from the bottom of their fixtures. This latter necessitated using a drill to open the front vents directly in front of the burner insert screws a tad to allow a Phillips screwdriver shaft to reach them (the grill gap was too small to pass my screwdriver). Not having my replacement part in hand yet and forgetting for the moment if the igniter was included I also removed the gas valve to inspect it but that should not be needed otherwise.I'll update after the install is complete.Update: I afixed the new pilot, joined the front to the frame, reattached the two burners and again using two small crescent wrenches I tightened the gas line to the pilot fitting. The wire leading to the igniter tip just pulls out and was reinserted into the new one prior to affixing the pilot. The pilot flame is much longer than with the old one, it heats the sensor quicker and overall the unit now works perfectly.
