I recently purchased the MSR Universal 2-Person Tent Footprint Tarp for my camping trips, and here’s my thorough review of the product:Packaging & First ImpressionsThe MSR Universal 2-Person Tent Footprint Tarp comes in a compact and easy-to-carry bag that is light and convenient for packing. The tarp itself is well-constructed right out of the box, and the MSR quality is immediately noticeable. It feels sturdy, well-designed, and up to the brand’s usual standards for outdoor gear.Material & DurabilityThe tarp is made of durable polyester, which is both waterproof and tear-resistant. MSR claims it’s designed to provide extra protection for your tent floor, especially on rough terrain, and I completely agree. During my trip, I used it under my 2-person MSR tent, and it performed exactly as expected, keeping the tent floor clean and safe from abrasion. The fabric feels robust, and the seam sealing was effective at keeping moisture away. I experienced some wet weather, and there was no issue with water seeping through. The material also resists tearing and punctures, which is crucial when you’re camping on uneven or rocky ground.Size & FitAs the name suggests, this footprint is designed for MSR 2-person tents, but it can also be used with other similarly sized tents. It fits my MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2 perfectly, covering the entire bottom of the tent with a little extra to provide a good buffer between the tent floor and the ground. It’s not oversized, so it fits neatly under the tent without excess material sticking out.If you’re using it for other tents, I’d recommend checking the dimensions carefully to make sure it aligns with your tent’s footprint, though it’s versatile enough for most 2-person models.Protection & FunctionalityThe main purpose of a footprint is to protect the tent from abrasion and moisture, and the MSR Universal Tarp certainly does that. I’ve used it on both gravel and grass, and it has shielded the tent floor from sharp rocks, sticks, and other debris. The extra protection helps extend the life of the tent fabric by preventing wear and tear from harsh surfaces.Additionally, it helps to keep moisture out, particularly on wet or muddy ground. It provides an extra layer of defense against water seeping up into the tent, which is a critical feature in rainy conditions. The footprint also adds thermal insulation, providing a slight barrier between the cold ground and your tent. While it’s not a heavy-duty insulating pad, it can make a noticeable difference in cooler weather.Ease of Use & PortabilityThe footprint is incredibly easy to set up. Simply unroll it and place it under your tent. The process is seamless, and the tarp doesn’t take up much space in your backpack, especially considering its protective benefits. It’s very lightweight (only about 6 ounces), so it doesn’t add much weight to your pack at all.It also folds up nicely and fits back into its compact stuff sack, which is great for storage and organization. The tarp itself is easy to clean too — a quick rinse or wipe-down after a muddy campout is all it takes to keep it in good shape.VersatilityWhile it’s designed for use under MSR tents, you could also use it as a standalone groundsheet or for other activities, such as picnics or campsite cooking areas. Its multi-purpose functionality adds value to an already great product.Price vs. ValueGiven its durability and the fact that it enhances the lifespan of your tent, the MSR Universal 2-Person Tent Footprint is a good investment for anyone serious about camping. It’s reasonably priced for the protection and peace of mind it provides, considering the potential damage to your tent floor over time without it.Final ThoughtsI’m extremely satisfied with the MSR Universal 2-Person Tent Footprint Tarp. It’s a durable, lightweight, and functional piece of gear that does exactly what it’s supposed to — protect your tent from the elements and ground debris. It’s simple to use, folds down easily for storage, and adds value to your camping setup by extending the life of your tent.Pros: • Durable and waterproof material • Perfect fit for MSR 2-person tents (and compatible with other 2-person tents) • Lightweight and easy to pack • Protects against abrasion and moisture • Easy to clean and maintain • Compact for storageCons: • Might be overkill for very mild conditions or very soft ground • Slightly higher price compared to generic footprints, but the quality is worth itRating: 5/5 starsThis footprint is a must-have accessory for anyone using an MSR 2-person tent or any similar model. It does an excellent job of protecting your tent and keeping you dry, and I’d definitely recommend it for all outdoor enthusiasts who want to preserve their gear for many trips to come.

Haven't used it yet so the 5 star may be a bit premature but it is well made and I like that it has an integral stuff sack attached.I read all the negatives about the lack of grommets for the tent poles but I also looked at the fixes for it on YoutubeBut MSR, would it really be that hard to just put a pack of 4 grommets in in case people want them? It would save you getting a bunch of neg comments and save your customers (you know, the ones that pay your salary) a bunch of aggravation.

I just unpackaged this and set it up in the living room. It would have been nice for this footprint to include grommets for the poles to insert. Another feature that is missing is color coded corners. With a rectangular tent and rectangular footprint, it will be very difficult to tell which side should be up in the dark. I bought this footprint along with a new Hubba Hubba NX to replace my 22 year-old Sierra Designs Meteor Light CD (discontinued model) and footprint. That tent served me very well but finally lost it's ability to shed water. I did not like any of the newer 3 season backpacking tents that SD makes as they are essentially two pole domes. In my experience this type of tent simply does not hold up to strong winds in rain storms that are common in my area. Anyway the old tent was an irregular hexagon and so it was much more difficult to install the footprint upside down. I added orange masonry string to corresponding corners on each of the footprint and tent so that should solve that problem but still the foot print lacks the security of grommets for the tent poles to be inserted. I hope the tent and footprint prove to be as weather resistant and durable as my Sierra Designs tent was. Time will tell.

Really nice thing. Helps to keep your tent clean and dry. Totally recommend it.The only drawback of this particular footprint is that you can't insert poles into it and it's hard to pack it back the same as it was packed by manufacturer.

I wasn’t a fan of MSR moving to the universal footprint and was initially disappointed. However, now that I’ve used it over 20 nights my suspicions were allayed. I use it with my Hubba Hubba NX2. It does pack down quite large but it’s a footprint, it can stay on the outside of my pack without me worrying about it taking up space inside my pack.
