The valve has a small rubber disc that prevents back flow. In my installation the back pressure from the expansion of my hot water tank in my boat pushed the disc through to the inlet side of the unit so I got no hot water.

As said the tubing was extremely hard to get onto the valve, and using them to bleed my breaks, the 1 way valve failed. I had to loop the hose after the valve to prevent air from being sucked back into the caliper. Wasted my money. I should have just double looped some hose and put it down into a cup full of break fluid and saved money. It might be ok for low pressure operations like a 1 way check valve on a gas tank or crank case vent or in a vacuum line.

These things work well and you can use them for a million different things. In my case I combined these with a (4) lengths of 3/16" tubing, (2) of the larger powerade bottles, (2) 2 1/4" x 3/8" neodymium magnets and some epoxy to make my own one man brake bleeding tools. I drilled a hole in the cap that fits the tubing tightly, ran the tubing down to the bottom of the bottle and left about 3" coming out the top. Then I added the one way valve with another 12" tubing on the other side attached with the hose clamps they come with and then just epoxied the magnet on the back of the bottle so they will stay on the rotors even when the bottles are full of liuid.
