This boot from ONeil is quality. The sole has good tread and seems like it will last. Size is true to my normal shoe size. I order 1 size down because I like a very snug fit when sporting about in the water and some give over time is inevitable. Also because I get them small (and I like to minimize any possible hangups) I cut off the adjustable fidget at the heel area. The strap over the arch is enough and works well.I do prefer the solid sole under the split in the xcel and used to recommend the xcel split toe reef bootie and owned a few, but over time quality has suffered especially the soles durability since going to the gum colored material.Hoping ONeil will keep up the quality.

Size is right on - I usually wear a mens 9.5 shoe for comfort, allowing a bit extra room. I ordered the 9 which is the exact size of my foot, so there was no room for water to fill up, snug fit but comes off and goes on easy, even when wet. Used mostly for kayaking and lake/ocean swimming. I’ve swam nearly 1000 meters at a time wearing these, no complaints. A big step up from department store “aqua socks”. The split toe feels better but takes some getting used to the appearance.

What I like:1) Durability: Had mine for 2 years now, still going strong and still fits well. I surf 2-3x week and use them all year even during summer here in San Diego. Why during summer? sting rays, see additional comment below.2) Size: Im a size 9-9.5 in regular shoes. I bought a size 9 and it fits well.3) Sting ray: Stepped on one a week ago. These booties saved me from a lot of pain and suffering. The spine jabbed right at the top part of the booty. It did penetrate but the depth of the puncture wound in my ankle was not very deep (~0.5cm deep, 0.5cm length). I was able to tolerate the pain and stay out in the surf for another 2 hours. Took a couple days off, and was back out in the water like nothing ever happened. What I don't like: They due accumulate some water from time to time, but nothing significant enough to affect their performance. By raising feet above the surface for half a second usually does the trick.

Nice product, upper section is a snug comfortable fit only downfall to the item is the sole. The sole does not end at the back of the heel to reflect a true shoe size fit. Possibly a half size option may provide full sole coverage making the product not feel undersized but the question would be, if a half size up was ordered to cover the sole difference would the upper part still have the same snug feeling?

These O'Neill tropical low split toe boots are PERFECT! After buying and wearing another brands attempt at supplying sole protection which was heavier, maybe for hiking barefoot over lava, or even a run on pavement, that boot had a fire-toe configuration, a separate big toe, fore-toe, and an enclosure for the remaining 3 toes. What a nightmare trying to fit your foretold in its own space plus your big toe separate, than getting only 3 toes in the main forefoot space. These O'Neill's fit like a glove, so comfy & soft, perfect for surfing over lava, coral or just SUP paddling! 5*****

I have had a pair of these for 2 months. I paddle surf about 3 times per week on the indian ocean. these are great for gripping the board, for comfort, and still holding up on some wicked sharp coral and urchins. they are tight. I wear a 9.5 or 10 and ordered 9 as may reviewers said not to get them too big. but they need to be tight. this worked fine for me my big toes and second toes are VERY close together when I am barefoott, they almost overlap--so I thought it would be hard to get them on with the split toe. i got used to it quickly and must say these BOOTS ARE AWESOME.

I wear a 9.5 but am closer to 9 than 10. The 9 fit great but it squeezed my left toe some, but it didn't get uncomfortable until after a few hours. Not sure if a 10 would be too large or I just have a fat toe and need the version without the separated toe.Regardless of the small issue I'll be ordering another pair either sized up or no split toe, this is THE BEST surf shoe I have ever put on my foot, definite 5 star rating. Try them on at home for an hour before taking them out to see how your big toes feel.
