This lock has a strong steady shackle it is not lite weight but is not super heavy and the one I have has a good mount, so great for pedal bikes and good for lower end power bikes a over all good choice if you don't have the budget for a angle grinder resistant lock. The only con is the lock can be a bit tricky you need to wiggle the key a bit but once you figure it out it is a snap. You can't really tell from the picture but it withstood a twist attack came through like a champ.

It is very strong, heavy and durable. Used for 3 weeks, no problems. I'm spraying it every week though. Gets wet at work.

I don't attach it to my bike, they attachment does not look sturdy and it is a heavy lock. I usually carry it in a backpack when I need it. I don't need it for my daily commute, as i have a secure place at work for the bike. It has a quality hard to pick lock and the locking mechanism locks in 4 places, not 2 like some cheaper locks. Overall, it's good for locking in public, you would need a grinder to remove it and I think you would have to cut it twice due to the locking mechanism.

Really sturdy and heavy. Best security rating. However sometimes it's hard to get it locked, you need to have the shackle and key in the exact right position. The key with the light in it is a bit big, not so convenient. Plus for 5 keys included.

OnGuard does not make this lock 18mm anymore. Nevertheless I bought the updated one (16mm) and I am very satisfied. I lock my bikes for long hours in downtown Chicago and have never had issues. In fact no one has even attempted to go against this lock. This version now comes with hardware to attach to bike, but I hang it off my Surly rack (steel) as it is a hefty lock.Previous lock (18mm) started failing after 5 years of non stop--virtually daily--use. Including polar vortex (minus 50 degrees couple of winters ago). Only maintenance was spraying WD40 occasionally. Plastic housing broke with all the bumping on my rack but the innards were metal and held up great. The other company with a top notch reputation is Kryptonite but the Fudgetabout it was twice the price and was 16mm.When I lock my bike I use an additional mini lock for the back wheel. This is to make it even more unappealing to even try to steal. Bike theft is mostly a crime of opportunity.Keep in mind tough that a u-lock can get defeated though. Either a plasma gun (hard to get as gas tanks are highly regulated). Power tools (namely disc grinders). Liquid nitrogen (hard to get).

I bought this U-Lock after a week of researching bike locks online. I have now had this U-Lock for two years. Let me tell you my impressions.First of all – I bike to work every day at a major academic hospital in coastal New England located in a not so wonderful part of town. Because this lock is so big and heavy, I chose to leave it permanently hooked up to the bike rack next to the entrance of my clinical office building. Although the bike rack is partly covered from above by a small carport, it is otherwise completely exposed to the coastal New England elements: lots of snow, ice, wind, rain, and humid heat. Because of this location, I decided to add a generous dose of WD-40 before leaving it on the bike rack. The U-Lock has never left the bike rack since. Now – fast forward two years – the U-Lock continues to work flawlessly. It has never once given me issues. The U-arms have never gotten stuck or refused to budge. The key has never had issues sliding into the keyhole. A professor – who used a simple chain – had his bike stolen while parked next to mine. Mine was left alone. The professor got a new bike and surprise – had bought my same exact lock. The local patrol cops even said it was overkill. That no Thief in his right mind would try to steal a bike with this lock on it because it was easier to move on to another less secure bike. Point taken.Aside from grime and a tiny bit of superficial peeling of what looks like a protective clear Lacquer around the rubberized material, the Lock is still perfect. This thing is a champ. It's taken a beating and then some. And after a simple cleaning with some soapy water and cheesecloth, it looks wonderful again. Almost brand new except for some scuff marks from daily wear and tear.Don't spend the extra money on the Kryptonite New York U-Lock. Not only is it not worth it, but this lock has a beautiful design to it. Like what a bike lock would look like if Johnny Ive (Apple's Chief of Design) would create if he ever made a bike lock and loved Caterpillar Construction colors. I never thought I'd say a bike lock is beautiful – but this one's made me say so. And to boot – it works so simply and without any fuss – I don't have to ever worry about it. Lastly – there's the insane security to this lock's design. This thing was designed to frustrate a bike thief. It is a damn silverback gorilla among fragile capuchin monkeys. It's a total beast. It's – yep – a BRUTE!

Even though the description clearly states (as of 4/16/2013) that the item comes with a mounting bracket, it does not. I returned the lock, received the replacement, and still, without the bracket. I kept the lock and the customer service credited my account $10 (the difference between this lock and the identical lock without the mounting bracket in the description). I was thinking about re-ordering another OnGuard, thinner, lock that comes with a bracket, but I decided not to due to very unfavorable brackets reviews. I'd rather have a serious lock without a bracket. The shackle is very tough. No sane thief is going to jump on it with a hack saw unless they have all day. I can't say the same about the bottom part of the u-lock. After closer examination with a flashlight, I discovered that the housing is made of plastic with metal pins that secure the shackle. In my opinion, a heavy hammer would do the job of breaking the locking part, but I could be wrong (I hope). The metal pins are about 1/4 of an inch in diameter, which is serious. If the housing was made of metal, this u-lock would be very heavy, but also nearly impossible to destroy. You might ask: "Why 5 stars then?" The answer is - it serves my needs. I compared it to other locks out there and this is the one for me. It has the right length (10.25" is enough to secure your frame and rear wheel to the bike stand), and a thickness (0.66"). The shackle is rubberized to protect the paint of the bicycle. I wasn't sure if I could trust this lock alone, so I got other items to secure my bike:Kryptonite 720018210610 KryptoFlex 3/8" x 7' 1007 Double Loop Security Cable to wrap around my front wheel, rear wheel ant the seat; The Ultra Bike Club Jr # BC 00304 to secure my front wheel to the fork; and theM-Wave Automatic Cable Lock for quick locking.I especially love the last item. This item has some bad reviews due to failure to prevent theft. Not fair, considering that most people know that using a cable lock alone is a joke. Most of the cable locks can be cut in seconds with the bolt cutters, that's why they should be used as a supplement to u-locks or chain locks. M-Wave Automatic Cable Lock is thick, but a huge percentage of that thickness is a vinyl cover, so it should be used only if your bicycle remains in your sight at all times. Very light and flexible, made of braided steel. It's spring loaded, and the price is less than $8. Tough enough to prevent a passerby to jump on it and drive away. But please, don't make a mistake thinking that buying 5 cables like this one is going to save you money and your bicycle. A seasoned thief needs probably one minute to cut through all of them and be gone. I hope that helps.
