I have seen this movie many times over the years since it was shown on television during the 1960s. I think I’ve only seen it once since then on a larger screen, but I knew to buy a copy when it was discussed on TCM. My wife was surprised at how funny the movie is. Yes, it is set during World War II in the Pacific, but it is a comedy. There are a few short moments of combat activity, but it is the most tame submarine movie I have ever seen. Much of the comedy is predictable, but enjoyable. The cast is full of a few surprises, and the story is entertaining. There are some DVDs for sale that I would not buy - they are a poor video transfer at low resolution. Get the Blu-Ray disk of this movie and enjoy it.

Cary Grant stars as the captain, Tony Curtis is for all purposes his leading Lady in this romp about a run down submarine amid ww2, who pick up 5 women, and with all those men aboard this pink, yes I said pink submarine...there is bound to be laughs...This was a real hit at the box office only third to Ben Hur and Psychi that year...Enjoy!

優れた芸術家はインタビューではなく作品で答えを出すと言うが俳優もまた映画で答えを出すというお手本が本作。1950年代「ケイン号の反乱」「海底２万マイル」「ミスタア・ロバーツ」「眼科の敵」とう海軍物や潜水艦物の傑作が作られたがケーリー･グラントとしては“どうせならもっとはじけた映画を作ろう”と思ったのであろう。プロローグのパールハーバー（真珠湾奇襲）は本格的な迫力で続く破損した潜水艦をグラントが陣頭指揮を取って修理するシーンは独立プロを立ち上げたグラント自身の情熱も反映されており喜劇であるが感動すら覚える。本作から喜劇に進出したトニー･カーティスのお調子者副官も本領発揮でまるで後年「大脱走」のジェームズ･ガーナーのお手本になったのではないか？と思わせるキャラである。ジョーン・オブライエンやダイナ･メリルといった女優さんを乗組員に入れるのもグラントらしい楽しさでアーサー・オコンネルの偏屈おじさんも安定感ある。ラッセル･ハーランの撮影も良く2時間があっという間の会心作。監督に新人だったブレイク･エドワーズを抜擢したが本作が大当たりしその後「ピンクパンサー」シリーズ等で1960年代以降の喜劇界をリードする事になったのはグラントに先見の明があったからでしょう。

戦争映画？ では最も好きな作品です。昔、TVで放送された日本語版も、ユーモアのある翻訳だったような気がしております。何処かで出ていないかといつも思う作品です。
