THE SANCTUARY OF LOURDES

THE SANCTUARY OF LOURDES

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

Mary you appeared to Bernadette in the fissure of this rock. In the cold and dark of winter, you made the warmth of a presence, light and beauty feel. In the wounds and darkness of our lives, in the divisions of the world where evil is powerful, bring hope and restore confidence! You who are the Immaculate Conception, come to our aid sinners. Give us the humility of conversion, the courage of penance. Teach us to pray for all men. Guide us to the springs of true Life. Make us pilgrims journeying within your Church. Satisfy in us the hunger of the Eucharist, the bread of the journey, the bread of life. In you, O Mary, the Holy Spirit has done great things: in his power, he has brought you to the Father, in the glory of your Son, alive forever. Look with motherly love at the miseries of our body and heart. Shine like a bright star for all at the time of death. With Bernadette, we pray to you, Mary, with the simplicity of children. Put the spirit of the Beatitudes in our hearts. Then we will be able, from here below, to know the joy of the Kingdom and sing with you: Magnificat!

Saint Bernadette Soubirous

Saint Bernadette Soubirous

Marie Bernarde Soubirous, known as Bernadette was born in Lourdes on January 7, 1844, from a very poor family: her parents ran the mill.

On February 11, 1858, while she was collecting wood near the cave, the Beautiful Lady appeared to her, wearing a white veil, a blue belt, had a rose on each foot and held the rosary in her hand. During her sixteenth apparition she revealed her name to Bernadette: Raising her eyes to heaven and joining her hands in prayer, she said in the local dialect: I am the Immaculate Conception. In total there were 18 apparitions, the last one took place on July 16, 1858, Berandette died at the age of 35 on April 16, 1879.

The Source in the Grotto of Massabielle

The Grotto of Massabielle is a limestone cavity located below the town of Lourdes. From the ninth apparition of February 25, 1858 a spring flows (here in the photo). The water was piped for pilgrims to draw from the taps. To the right of the grotto are the pools where pilgrims can immerse themselves.

At the time, it was part of the numerous water mills that were located along the Lapacca stream which flowed into the Gave river. Bernadette was born here in 1844 at the Boly Mill. She lived with her parents for 10 years and called this house "the mill of happiness"
