I'd listened to probably a dozen different splash cymbals, waiting to find one that had a nice, smooth wash. Unfortunately, most of them I listened to were too ringy, and some sounded almost buzzy. Then I heard this little guy on Paiste's website and decided to give it a go. Since most music dealers don't stock much of the Dark Energy line (they're crazy expensive!), I decided to bite the bullet and order this guy. After all, I had a bunch of Amazon gift certs to use, so my out-of-pocket expense was more reasonable. (I admit it, this is a really expensive cymbal!)I danced a jig when it finally arrived and immediately put it on the stand. It's very lightweight, and very thin; it almost feels like a piece of rigid foil! That said, I grabbed a stick and took a swing at it. It let loose an explosive burst of sound that died out quickly with an airy, breathy wash. There's a bit of a low-pitch fundamental ring to it, but if you're not right next to the cymbal, you won't really hear it (it wasn't picked up in a recording, either). Most splash cymbals have a longer decay, and if that's what you're looking for -- this probably won't work for you. But its sound is incredibly smooth! Even more so than Paiste's Signature splash (itself very nice), which I'd seen at a number of music retailers.Bottom line: It's expensive, but none of the more moderately priced splash cymbals can touch it in terms of smoothness! It has a unique sound in that it is more of a brief burst of breathy sparkle, rather than a longer ring.
