What a positive change for my single speed conversion. I had purchased an entry level single speed conversion kit, so I could decide if I like single speed. I do like single speed, but the entry level tensioner would let the chain "slip" when I had to put a lot of pressure on the pedals. This Paul Melvin wraps more of the chain around the cog and I immediately noticed a significant improvement in the drive train of my bike. It was easy to install. I did have to add two links to my chain.

The spring is to soft that makes the chain hit the chainstay. If they put a stronger spring it will solve the issue i am having with it.

Quality product and performs well. Paul Melvin is known in the cycling community for making quality, specialty items... so they can be a bit pricey. I purchased this tensioner for ease of tinkering with my "urban street bicycle" with a 3 speed hub. Mainly so I don't have to deal with setting the chain to the exact length via frame rear-hub bolts when changing out of the front sprocket, which can be a PITA at times. I should note that I purchased this back in October 5, 2011 for $57.37. Looks like the price has gone up since which is a bit of a shame.

Did the job perfectly...I have a 650c Trek Single Track with spacers on the back and 3 up front. This lets me rock a 3-ring up front with no fuss, no noise, and low maintenance. Build quality is second to none.

I used this component to build a two speed mountain bike with two chainrings in the front, and a single ring in the back.So far it has functioned flawlessly in this application and in general is an excellent chain tensioner in general. When I bought it I was concerned that it would not be worth the money, but after seeing it in person, and having put moderate wear on it, I definitely thing the price point is inline with the items value.

Prior to buying the Melvin, single speed conversion chain tension duties were handled by a fifteen year old Alivio derailleur on my Ibis cross bike. Did it get me there? Yes. Did it do so in style? Not by a longshot. Now I can consider setting up my bike as a dinglespeed, which I just might. Thanks, Paul.
