Short Range pH 3-6 Test Strips

For Testing Sushi Rice, Salsa, and Kefir

These 50 strips are conveniently packaged in a zip bag. They are premium quality strips made in America and have a vivid color chart, enabling the easy determination of pH to half a unit. The chart has color block matches at 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0. This narrow range enables the easy determination of pH of solutions within that range than standard wide range tests.

How Do I Test Sushi Rice's pH?

We recommend measuring the acidity (pH) of your Sushi Rice within 30 minutes of acidification (mixing the cooked rice and vinegar solution) and testing a slurry of it.

Make a rice slurry by gathering a ¼ cup sample of the cooked, acidified rice taken from various locations in the batch and add ¾ cup of distilled water in a clear plastic or metal blend cup.

Blend the slurry (mixture) for approximately 20 seconds to create a thorough mix.

Remove one strip of 3.0-6.0 pH test paper and hold between index finger and thumb.

Dip the test strip into the liquid portion of the slurry for 1-2 seconds.

Shake off excess liquid and match color of pad to color chart provided with test strips.

Is There a Simpler Method for Testing?

Yes, there is, but the simpler method is less accurate.

Many customers of ours simply wet the strip's test pad with distilled water & press it against the rice for up to 30 seconds. Then they compare it to the color chart to get their pH reading. That being said, swabbing the outside of the rice grains won’t be quite as accurate as testing a slurry. For the most accurate results with this strip, you would need to dip the test strip into a puree of the rice, utilizing the above method.

If you are looking to test anything in the 4.5 to 5.5 range these are completely useless. I tested with a ph meter that read 5.2 and these strips indicated a 6+ ph.

The results are different every time. Even when evaluating via a control such as distilled water.....they are still different every time

Why would the manufacturer be so daft to put their third party label over the ph level legend. Literally the only thing that matters and it’s covered. Not only that but it won’t come off without ripping the paper underneath.

Product works like it’s meant to, but I can’t effectively compare it to the chart because a barcode was placed over top the colour chart! Horrid label placement…turns this into guess work.

The greens are so hard to distinguish, but I asked someone more knowledgeable than me and they said it was a good reading

Edit to add-I reached out to the company itself and they were able to send me new labels to compare to, looks like amazon is the one that placed their company barcode along the front. Bartovian was very easy to work with and quick with their response time!Original review- The product works great in itself however I could not properly identify the coloring to the chart as 3 of them are completely covered on both packets. Maybe whoever does the labeling can place the barcode on the back instead?

Why on earth the manufacturer would stick a label clear over the top of colour indicator tabs is totally idiotic and beyond utterly ridiculous?!!!? Makes no literal sense whatsoever... And clearly they are not reading all the other product reviews before this one that say the exact same thing. SMH And don't try to peel of the label, it only ruins what colours remain showing. And that's the reason for the 1 star rating

We use these for kettle sours, so that we don't compromise our pH meter by putting it in contact with our bacteria. They go straight to the outside trash after use and we haven't seen any issues. Cheers!

Got these to quickly double-check the PH on foods before I water bath canned them. Anything 4.6 or more acidic is safe for water bath canning and doesn’t need to be pressure-processed. These strips specifically have a 4.5 listed right on them, so I always aim for that color. They work great, and I’m very happy with the purchase!

These test strips gave me great peace of mind. Changing a recipe for canning is a big "no-no" due to changing the ph of the food and potentially causing botulism poisoning. Now I know my salsa is well within the safe ph zone and will not grow botulism and make someone sick.
