Planet Bike Protege 8.0 Bike Computer

About Planet Bike

In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

I bought one for my road bike and liked it, so I got a second one for my mountain bike (you can keep track of two bikes separately on the same unit, but that seems more trouble than it's worth. I scratched up one (user error) and replaced it with this one. Worked well for years. You need the directions to set it up, but the directions are clear and available online if you lose the ones that come with it. It takes a standard 2023 battery and they last a year or two. When you replace the battery, you need to set the wheel size again, but you can set the odometer to whatever it was before you swapped the battery. It's easy to read as you ride. I mostly use it on club rides to follow cue sheets. You don't need to fiddle with any buttons unless you're resetting the time of day or something. To reset the ride odometer, you just nudge the whole unit forward. When you start to ride, it turns itself on. It's easy to remove when you need to, but I leave mine on the bike all the time, whether I'm riding or it's on the rack. It stays on securely. The magnets stay on securely too. No complaints.

I used this on a couple of Bacchetta Giro recumbent bikes (20 and A26). The wire to the sensor is just long enough for this. It might get a little tight if you are tall and have your handlebars set high, but I have a few inches to spare. I like this because I can see all of the parameters I want to monitor on one screen: current speed, trip distance, average speed, trip time, and maximum speed. I have no use for displays that scroll or cycle through readings. I also prefer a wired system like this so that interference and connecting are not an issue, as well as avoiding extra batteries and extra battery drain. There are a few issues I have with this, most of them minor.1) The "button" mechanism where you slide the computer in its mount to change the display is not great. It is a little awkward compared to a normal button. It can also get stuck, so that a push to change the display turns into a "push for 3 seconds to clear the trip data" instead. Since it always comes out of sleep mode in the first display, and I always want to use the third display, this gives me several opportunities per ride to clear my trip odometer and statistics.2) It appears that the time it takes to detect that I have stopped is not removed from the trip statistics. This means that average speeds are a little lower if you make many stops.3) The display update interval is about three seconds. I know that I could have written the firmware to get this down to one second or less. This is fairly minor, but can be annoying.4) A second one of these that came with a bike I bought has trouble with the entire computer being reset unexpectedly. This doesn't happen often, and may be associated with getting wet; I haven't completely figured it out yet. A fresh battery did not solve it.5) On both of my computers, the display often has a dark blemish at the bottom, probably at the ground connection. This is cosmetic, as it does not obscure the characters on the display. I think it may only happen for a while after powerup.6) The setup routine is tedious and prone to errors. This is probably unavoidable, and should be rarely encountered.7) Data and calibration are not saved through a battery change, so you need to be very sure to save your calibration setting and to write down your odometer reading before changing the battery. In the case of my second unit which has reset problems, this means that chunks of the odometer reading are lost because it resets without warning.Overall I can recommend this, and given the lack of options in wired computers, I would probably buy it again.

I has owed many Cateye and other branded bike computers. This is the first time I owe a Planet Bike bike computer. I bought it based on the positive reviews here. But very disappointed. The speed is not accurate and slow to update. It would take like two seconds for the speed to update. The distance measured is not accurate also. It seems like it missed counting the wheel revolutions. I wonder if mine is defective or not. Tried to increase the wheel circumference and did not help. Moved the wheel sensor closer, didn't help neither.

This was a replacement for one that stopped functioning after 3 yrs. The new one is great, just programmed it and slid onto the previous mount. Very fast delivery on an international shipment.

I bought 2 of these (1 for me, 1 for the wife) about a month ago, and they have worked flawlessly since day one. At the end of our rides, both odometers are usually within 2/100ths of a mile over a 15-20 mile distance, so they are both either working perfectly or screwed up exactly the same.I bought these for the multi-line display, which has been great while riding. I love the current speed display with the up/down arrow showing how your current speed measures up to your average pace. We've honestly been riding harder as a result of trying to keep that arrow pointing up as much as possible (meaning we are going faster than our average). Having the ride time, distance, and a clock all on the same screen have allowed us to do a ride without the wife feeling the need to wear a watch (we're usually pressed for time). It also helps the wife who isn't comfortable scrolling through a lot of screens/displays to see all of this data while she is riding, so bonus points there. The computers are pretty simple to setup, and once setup they are beyond easy to use. Utilizing the included rubber "spacers" included in the package, they mount firmly to the handlebars on our Trek bikes with no slippage. At no point does it feel like this computer is going to bounce out of its mount on the handlebars, but we do 95% road and paved path riding. I also leave them attached to the bikes while they are hanging on the back of my truck heading to our biking destination, and have had no issues thus far.Bottom line, this computer works as advertised. This is our 3rd different bike computer in the past 6 years, and has been by far the best.

Not recommended because it worked well only for about 2 weeks, then intermittently, now not at all. Sensor on bike fork seems to be the problem--too difficult to position initially so as to get any data to the computer, then quickly stopped working. Also, quality not very good: what looks to be a burn mark, perhaps from manufacturing, at about 5 o'clock on face of computer impaired its appearance. Finally, seller was unresponsive when contacted.
