Why Fence Post Caps?
The most vulnerable part of a fence post is the end grain. In wet weather conditions, the top of your posts will absorb more water than any other part of the post. This leads to mildew, mold, moss growth and rot. Fence post tops are also exposed more to sun and wind, which dries the wood and causes cracks. Fence post caps solve all those problems by protecting post tops from the elements. Allowing them to last longer and be safer. Since rough edges stay hidden under the cap, a misplaced hand is not likely to pick up a splinter.
Depending on the caps you choose, they may also offer valuable protection against birds and other wildlife. With pointed caps, you’ll find that squirrels and birds that previously liked to sit on your posts and make a mess will start hanging out somewhere else.
What you need to Know! Nominal vs Actual (True) Sizes
Measure before Ordering
Before you order fence post caps, you’ll need to choose between nominal and actual (true) sizes. Before selecting a certain size, get out a tape measure and double-check the posts. You’ll want to make sure that your new post caps fit well, but not too tightly. When post caps are snug around the post, you’ll risk cracking them as the wood expands. Not only that, but a snug fit won’t allow any ambient moisture to evaporate, which can cause your posts to rot more quickly.
Nominal
Most treated posts are somewhat smaller than their advertised measurements. In these cases, you’ll need to purchase post caps in nominal sizes.
· Pressure treated 4x4 posts typically measure 3.5" x 3.5"
· Pressure treated 4x6 posts typically measure 3.5” x 5.5”
· Pressure treated 6x6 posts typically measure 5.5" x 5.5”
Actual (True)
If you have rough-cut, composite or vinyl fence posts, they will most likely have actual measurements. so, a 4x4 post with actual measurements will be 4 inches on all sides, you'll need to purchase post caps in actual or True sizes.

For the price I really would not recommend as their are much better alternatives. Cheap shiny plastic that easily cracked after hand tightening screw onto post. Also one topper came slightly warped and was afraid it might crack as well so had to shave about 1/4 inch off both sides of post so it would fit.
