I expected that this would have a hinge to open and close. It does not. It is one solid piece of acrylic. I like that it is clear, sleek, and unobtrusive. It lets the plate/decor speak for itself without distractions.

I'm using this to display an 8 x 10" ceramic photo tile, which is quite heavy. This easel is perfect for the job, and since it's clear, it doesn't detract from the artwork. Excellent for supporting heavier items.
