POP & Lock – Power Tailgate Lock for Toyota Tundra, 2007 to 2021 Toyota Tundra, Truck OEM Lock, Anti Theft, Truck Tailgate Lock Replacement, Easy to Install, Made in The USA (PL8547TUN)

This is a useful product for the convenience of a powered tailgate lock for your Tacoma. I regret having waited so long (almost 4 years) to purchase and install one for my 2018 Gen 3 Tacoma. There are several YouTube videos providing installation guidance, but you must be careful that you view the correct video. Be sure that you are ready to do extra work if you decide to order this model lock. This is the Model PL8547HD, and it is NOT completely “Plug & Play.” It is much better than previous iterations of this product which required routing the wiring along the passenger side of the vehicle and a lot of cutting and soldering, but it is not as convenient as the true “Plug & Play” model. It requires the use of some 3M T-taps, type Blue 18 to 16 AWG Tap (included in the package). You must use them to tap into the existing wiring. Those electrically challenged may find the instructions provided by the supplier confusing and not worth the effort. I thought I was ordering the Plug & Play version Model PL8547TAC. I did not realize that I had the wrong item until I was in the middle of installation. Fortunately, there is a correction available. There is an accessory available, the POP & LOCK - PL9547TAC Plug & Play T-Harness Toyota Tacoma, that one can purchase to change the PL8547HD into the PL8547TAC. I immediately ordered the accessory T-Harness and it arrived in just a couple of days. I was able to install everything except the T-Harness while I waited without losing the use of my truck and completion of the installation took just a few minutes. Be aware also that the grommets between the tailgate and the truck bed will not be as easy to install as they look in the videos and the instructions for doing so are not clear. There is some criticism in the reviews on Amazon and in some of the videos on YouTube about the loudness of the Pop and Lock compared to some other models. Either the manufacturer has made improvements in that area, or the fact that I have an after-market tailgate cover of heavy-duty aluminum installed on my truck has deadened the sound, but I do not find the noise of the mechanism to be inordinately loud. Except for the difficulty in installing the tailgate grommets, the installation was easy and took less than an hour. I recommend the Plug & Play model for the convenience it provides for remote locking and unlocking of the tailgate. It enhances the security of the bed and provides a deterrence for tailgate thieves.

Easy install with youtube. Took me an hour. Easy upgrade to tacoma & it's nice to lock the tailgate now. The only challenge I had was I tapped into the wrong wire b/c the colors were different on one than the other. One of the colors of the wires doesn't correspond to the same color, but it was an easy fix!

Dead easy install. Watch one of the YouTube videos to confirm the wires to splice to. It is noisy when activated but that’s really a function of the hollow tailgate so put some sound deadening in if it bothers you. The actuator itself looks solid and well built.

Easy install, 1hr for one person. Well built, just enough zipties provided. The wiring instructions were backwards for my 20 Tundra, but it all worked out. Highly recommended.

many complain that this kit is expensive. this is true, especially considering you can make up your own for around $20. BUT what you're really paying for is the convenience of having it all in a kit. It's nice to have all the wires properly crimped, shielded and ready to go. You don't need to fab your own bracket and this one installs seamlessly. Be aware that the warranty specifically excludes items purchased on Amazon so be aware of that if it matters to you.The instructions provided in the kit are the worst part. They are inconsistent and pretty general. The key to installation is finding some that a correct for your vehicle. I recommend the ones provided by SparksParts. For a 2019 Tundra, I can confirm that the wires are in the same plug locations. It can be a little hard to get the quick-splices to work fully. I had to yard on em with some pliers to get the splice to actually form. The actuator itself is kinda loud, but it doesn't really bother me and if it does, just add some sound dampening material to the inside of the tailgate. Overall, I'm very happy and love that I can lock my tailgate with the key fob!

Ignore what the vehicle compatibility checker tells you - this unit works perfectly with a 2017 Toyota Tacoma. I have a double cab short bed TRD Off Road, and it works great! A few comments about the installation:I agree with other reviewers here that state the instructions are incorrect if you are installing this unit in a Tacoma. You will need a GOOD T27 Torx Bit (not a cheap one from certain freight companies located near a harbor) and be careful when removing/tightening the tailgate bolts. Since they are screwed into plastic you can easily wreck the threads. I did this with at least three of the bolts.Wiring the assembly out of your tailgate to the underside of your truck takes some doing. You'll need to pop out two rectangular plastic pieces and figure out how to accommodate the factory camera wiring as well as the P&L actuator wire. It can be done but it's no fun, and I ended up breaking both plastic pieces.I recommend running the wire along the passenger side of your truck along the frame rail. Be sure to run the wire behind the exhaust shroud to prevent the wire from becoming damaged from exhaust heat. You'll know it when you see it.To bring the wire into the cab, you'll find a rubber plug in the floor of the cab roughly underneath the front passenger seat. (see pic) Remove a plastic cover with 2 10mm bolts, exposing the rubber grommet. Remove the electrical tape surrounding the existing wiring going into the cab, then run your P&L wire into the cab along with the factory wire. Tape it back up, then replace the plastic cover and you'll never even know that a non-factory wire is even there, and you haven't compromised the weatherproofing (as it is) of your cab. The wire surfaces under the passenger seat, and from there it's easy to run the wire into the door sill wire channel into the passenger kick panel. No tools needed to remove the sill plate and kick panel, you remove one plastic nut by hand in the kick panel and pull it out. The sill plate then pulls straight up and out. Both are only held in by spring clips.In the passenger kick panel, unplug two white wiring connectors to reveal a lower black plug (the only one there). Unplug the black wiring plug and expose the lower green and red wire; those are your passenger power lock actuator wires. (pic attached). Tap in to them with REAL wire taps or solder like I did - green to green, and blue to red. DON'T use the taps that come with this kit, they are trash.The end result is that your tailgate will unlock with your key fob when you unlock all four (double cab) or both (access cab) doors. The actuator makes a solid "clunk" sound when triggered - some complain it's too loud, but get real! It's a TAILGATE.Overall I am very pleased with this kit and this mod, and I highly recommend it to all Tacoma drivers. You'll never worry about leaving your tailgate unlocked by accident again.
