Capstans offer a mechanical advantage over the hand-over-hand method of retrieving lines. Not only does a capstan do the heavy lifting and require only a small amount of manual effort from the user, but it's also much faster and safer than hand-over-hand pulling. The Powerwinch Capstan 300, for instance, offers a maximum pull of 300 pounds and a retrieval speed of 85 feet per minute. As a result, the Capstan 300 is ideally suited to a variety of uses, from retrieving anchors to assisting with sails to pulling crab or lobster pots from the sea floor. The capstan works via an easy-to-operate foot switch (included) that connects to your boat battery. Just press the foot lever and the capstan starts pulling, helping spare your back, speed up the retrieval process, and make your boating experience more pleasurable.

The maximum speed of the Capstan 300 depends on the rotational speed of the drum. To adjust the retrieval speed, simply decrease the tension on the retrieved line, which in turn helps you maintain control over a very heavy load with little effort. Boaters will also love the all-aluminum housing, durable polyester paint finish, and stainless-steel shafts, fasteners, and hardware, which stand up to nasty weather and heavy use. In fact, capstans are made with only a few mechanical parts, which not only make them easier to use, but also less prone to problems. Other features include a deck-mounted design that saves space for a rope locker; support for unlimited rope lengths; and heat-treated, oil-impregnated one-piece gears.

Powerwinch capstan is underpowered. Will NOT pull 300 lbs. Had it installed by Tom and Jerry's on 22' Hewescraft Ocean Pro but never worked well. They should use a better product on their boats. When I took it apart to troubleshoot it, there was no grease except for the main bearing. After greasing the gears it performed better but not well enough. Also the wiring kit makes the connections very difficult to keep tight and dry. Recommend a different brand foot switch. Better yet, buy a different capstan winch.

Not impressed. I live in SE Alaska, and being out on the water is what we do. For the price range Powerwinch has the market. So I thought it would be a no brainer purchase. I was wrong. It worked ok the first time. Pulled a 22lb anchor and 20' of chain and 250' like it should. Second time, pulled for about 50', then the capstan stopped spinning. The motor acted like it was overloaded when it should not have been. With a pulling assist of 50% of the load I got it up. Tried again a third time. 100' ou, pulled for about 25' then stopped. It acted like it was pulling up the bottom of the ocean when it should have been no problem. To make matters worse the two year warranty had expired a month earlier. Luckily Powerwinch said they would pay for repairs... Too bad I have to spend an hour pulling it off my boat and then putting it back on. Definitely not a happy buyer. Not recommended but there are few choices in the same price range.

Very weak pull. The specifications state a pull of 300 lb. With a weight scale attached it stalls at 50 lb. I can stall it by gripping with my hand, The factory told me it was a weak motor and sent another. The motor is way too small to pull 300 lb at the speed of the capstan. It is noisy and the bearings are sloppy. I discovered the first set of gears were dry. Grease made it a little quieter. It's China grade! What it does is add 50 lb. of pull to my pull so it does help pull an anchor out of the mud and assist lifting it to the surface.

Great puller! You can buy the installation wires and things cheaper than buying the kit from Powerwinch at your local car part store!

The winch came very quickly, very good service. It works okay, but struggles with a 22# anchor and 25' of chain in water over 160'.

Installed the Powerwinch but there were a couple of issues that I had to keep in mind. It came with 3 stainless steel all thread rods for mounting. On my boat as the point of the boat goes to the front it thickens this made the front all thread rod too short. The instructions indicated that you may need to install marine grade plywood as a back support. The provided nuts and washers are small in diameter and seemed to want to pull through the wood when tightened so I ended up cutting and installing a stainless steel back plate. After all of this was done and installed the first time I took the boat out and ran it the gear in the gear housing stripped. Sent it back and got a replacement one and installed it and have used it four times since I installed it and it works the way I was expecting it too. The directions indicate that there is a wire kit that you can buy. I would possibly recommend it because the way the direction call for all kinds of different wire connection sizes and it is a little difficult to locate without purchasing multiple packets of connections that you may not need.
