I have a very sweet and skittish rescue. She was kept in a crate for the first couple years of her life (my poor baby) and apparently, that's where she also would potty. Potty breaking her, despite all our efforts, was not happening and we finally gave in to her and set up a potty area for her in the bathroom (which was a pain but she is worth it). I had bought this (or one like it) when I first rescued her and she wanted NO part of it. I tried pads on pad trays, a doggy 'litter' box and finally ended up with pads on the tile. When we moved to a new home in a new state 5 years ago I tried this again, no bueno. Once again, we had converted one of our bathrooms to hers. Each morning I put down pads and every day, bless her heart, she would wee at the edge of them leaving a wee wee mess underneath them all. A mess to clean each time. I was washing floors no less than once a day and steaming them weekly. I was tired of it. I got online and thought I would give this a go..AGAIN.When it arrived it had a strong plastic smell. I set it out in the sun. The next thing I knew, I saw my other dog laying on it and sunbathing (I saw so many reviews where dogs chose to make this a bed instead of using it as intended)! About an hour later I brought it in and placed it in her bathroom. I called her in, treats in hand and while saying "Potty baby" and pointing to it, she would jump on it and I treated her (I broke one small treat into 4's). She jumped off and I said "Potty!" and pointed to the grass..she jumped back on and got a treat. That's all it took! 4 x's and when I checked it later, I was thrilled to find a wee!Cleaning. Pick up the pan, grass in place, and allow the wee to trickle out the corner and then wipe around the lip and under the edge before placing it back on the ground. I'm happy to report it does not reek of urine! I will take it out and rinse it it on Sundays and Wednesdays and allow it to dry..which should only take minutes in the NM sun (if it needs it, more often of course)! Check it and dump it throughout the day (fortunately, it's next to an unused bathtub/shower). Your dog may not use it if you allow urine to accumulate and they get wet paws or a 'squish' when they step on it.Product. The grass is very soft and apparently comfortable for pooches (as many reviewers said, they found their dogs preferred it as a bed). There were comments about the quality of grass. I don't understand the issue? It's a patch of soft fake grass for your dog to wee on in a black pan. I don't care if it's pretty to look at or not if it keeps pee-pee off my floor! It's soft. It's green. My dog peed on it! SUCCESS! Also, the price is great! May buy a back-up and store it until I need it.*I should note that we have doggy turf throughout our backyard and that may be why she took to it so easily. Don't give up on your pooch and keep trying. Also keep size in mind. It needs to be the right size for your pooch but you also need to be able to pick it up to empty it with ease ;) Good luck!**It's important that I note that my dog is on heart meds including a diuretic and we can't always be here to let her out. She's a great little gal and barks to go out. It's when we don't hear her or when we're sleeping that she needs a place to go. This fits the bill perfectly!

Like with anything you want to teach your puppy you have to start young! I also ask you ready the entire review as I did tremendous amount of research before purchasing this product and I believe I have solutions to many of the problems people have had in their reviews. I acquired a purebred chocolate lab when she was 8 weeks old. Initially all I had was some generic puppy pads that I had purchased from a local grocery store. I gated her in a small space while I was away (not in a crate) and she was using these for pee and poop. However the pads were a pain to continually clean up and after one or two pee's she was disinterested in using them and would have accidents. At about 10 weeks I had purchased the Tinkle Turf and received it the next day along with the Simple Solution X-LARGE PADS. The idea was that I would use the pads underneath the Tinkle Turk. I tried this combination in the small space while I was gone and it was next to the door when I was at home and while I was asleep there was just a pad next to the bedroom door. This worked beautifully! Eventually I rewarded her for using the Tinkle Turf with more space she could roam within the house. Eventually the Tinkle Turf stays next to the back door to the yard and she has had zero accidents and has free reign to the house. In face when I'm home I keep the back door open (do not have a doggy door) and when she has to go she finds the Tinkle Turf, notices the door is open and just goes outside! I believe the success of this product was small steps and the Simple Solution Training Pads. The two major problems (and one minor one) I've read is getting the dog to use the Tinkle Turf as well as the smell/cleanliness of the Tinkle Turf itself as well as a flimsy plastic tray. The easiest way to combat both of these problems is the Simple Solution X-Large Pads. When ordering these pads keep in mind they are mad to fit the Tinkle Turk. Don't let this discourage you because when you place the pad in the middle of the Tinkle Turf the pad absorbs all pee from your dog. Additionally the pad also has an attractant that will help aid your dog in using the Tinkle Turf. I suggest that you start our forcing your dog to be in a small space with the Tinkle Turf however not to small (I put mine in the kitchen and allowed my pups to use the hallway has her play area. Then slowly let the area grow. Now, I had nay sayers claiming she wouldn't use it when I moved it to the back door. But dogs are smarter then we give them credit for. All you have to do is show them where its at, their noses will do the rest (that's where the attractant comes in). Then reward your dog with more access to the house and test if they are able to seek out and use the Tinkle Turf. The second problem is the smell. I change the pad once a day (when I get home for the day) at that time (every other day) I will rinse off the Tinkle Turf. I have a hose in the back yard so I spray it down and let it dry in the Arizona Sunshine however simply hanging it up will just be fine. When you rinse it off you will see that the syntheic grass it self won't retain any liquid. Its the plastic underneath of the Tinkle Turf and the plastic tray that will retain smell. However if you have the Training Pads it not only makes clean up extreamly easy it also prevents any smell that people are worried about. The third and minor problem is people say the plastic tray breaks easily. I have a lab puppy and she runs and jumps on it, chews on it. Not to mention I initially transferred it everyday from my kitchen to the back door. I don't know what they are doing but I have not had a problem with it.To sum everything up, I love it. If you train your dog right with it and clean it by a simple rinse (no chemicals) plus the puppy pads. You'll be just fine! My puppy is 4 months old, only uses when she absolutely needs it and we haven't had any accidents. Its made puppy potty training so easy and no headaches! In my next installment I have a 3 month old Italian Greyhound entering the household and I will be attempting to litter box train him as well as the Tinkle Turf. Look for that review in the next month or so. I hope I've helped you make your decision on purchasing this fantastic item.
