difficult to use on small engine springs made for American iron

You would think the design would bottom out when it reaches the set height, but it does not. You have to check the pressure reading just at the moment that the base is fully in contact with the vise jaw, or in my case fully against the base of my arbor press. And you have to have the spring properly centered, which is not easy.Maybe if you spent enough time practicing, you could get repeatable reading, but I found it too much trouble to bother with.
