After reading the product description, I thought this winch had an automatic brake, but it does not have any break. So once you crank on a load, if there’s any resistance still on the winch, it wants to unwind very quickly with no safety system.

I installed this winch for hoisting and holding a heavy retractable stairwell in my pole barn. Holds well with no slipping and have found no negative issues with the operation of the unit. Well built and priced fairly.

Nice little unit. I’m using it for a tailgate hoist that needs to remain under control on the way down, so a friction mechanism like this one has was perfect.Note that the drum is drilled only on the outer plate, not on the inside plate, with holes for a wire clamp but not for a belt/strap loop through-bolt.

I had been looking for a hand winch with (a) 2-way locking and (b) no pre-loaded strapping or wire rope. (I needed to use dual synthetic lines for my load.) This QWORK hand winch did the trick! The locking works automatically in either direction. The unit appears to be well-made and -finished. It looks as if it will be very durable, though since I've been using it for only a few weeks, I did not rate its durability.

Falsely labeled as “worm gear” winch. This winch contains NO worm gears whatsoever. It has a friction mechanism in the little box that tries to restrict the load from falling. I’ll see how well it works. Shame on Amazon for allowing false advertising of this product. The gear ratio is 4:1, about like a boat winch. I measured 45 lb force on the handle to lift a 500 lb load. Good luck trying to lift the stated 1200 lb capacity load!On a bright note, the clutch mechanism inside the oval box does work nicely. It holds the load when you quit cranking. It smoothly disengages to allow you to lower the load in a controlled manner. Since it works, I revised my rating from two to three stars.I’d recommend this as a nice winch with a clever braking mechanism. But only for loads up to 400 lbs or so. It’s cheaper than any worm gear winches I could find.
