This diverter is a cool design that allow the diversion of the water coming down the gutter over to a barrel. When installed correctly it stops the flow into the container and sends it down the gutter. No mechanical or moving parts. The device is fixed in place. The main complaint is the piece that go into the gutter (either 2x3 or 3x4} need a 2 1/4 in hole. This version doesn't come with a hole saw. Most hole saw kits have a 2 in' and 2 1/2 in but not that size. I used a 2in and used a nibbler to enlarge the hole slightly on my metal gutters. The kits with hole saws only include saws made for wood or drywall. Metal saws are made from harder steel. Just in case the receptacles for the flex hose used to route the water from the diverter to the barrel is the same size as PVC 1 in pipe. The setup here required setting the barrel too far from the gutter for the included hose to work. The flex hose will extend to 31 in fully stretched. It hasn't rained since I installed it but it just about has to work. The key to a successful install based on the video is mounting the diverter even vertically with the hole drilled the the side of the barrel so the hose fills with water when full. This stops the water going into the barrel so it doesn't overflow. All the parts and pieces seem to be high quality. It's a cool product and so simple it screams "Why didn't someone think of this before now".

It was easy to install on a smaller downspout for my DIY blue rain barrel. No clogging so far, and I'm surrounded by tall trees that seem to aim for my gutters.I ended up with some major clogging once the spring storms kicked in, even though I try to keep my gutters clear and even made it through fall without am issue. I had to remove the screws in thy middle of a massive T-storm because water was sloshing heavily all over the side/corner of the house and onto vulnerable areas of my older wooden siding. I plan to go without the screws in the future so I can more easily remove it in case of another episode like this since it sits really snugly in the hole. I purchased the version without a hole bit since I have since around the house - in case others have had problems with the one that includes a bit.

Man, I wanted to give this a top-notch review, but there was one minor thing that prevented me. First off, the actually pieces to use with the downspout into the rain barrel are amazing, so I do love that part of the purchase 100%. The issue I had was with the hole saw bit. These seem to work fine with plastics and vinyl. No problem on the plastic barrel itself.. But it didn't work at all on the galvanized steel downspout at all. The arbor bit actually detached when trying to cut the hole. I ended up getting a name brand hole saw bit from Home Depot instead and it was a breeze from there. This is a great tight system for collecting the rainwater and diverting back excess through the downspout when it's topped off. Highly recommend this system. Just be weary of the hole saw bit.

We've had three units installed for two years now and overall we like the units. The units were easy to install. I watched several YouTube videos and followed along with the directions sent with the units. Easy peasy. A couple of them actually installed the units incorrectly by installing them too high on the downspouts. Winterizing the units wasn't difficult, just make sure you use a magnetic screwdriver with the screws as we had to run to Menard's for extra ones - had a couple that dropped into an inaccessible area. So, after a couple of years, we have found a two issues that affected our usage - they may, or may not affect yours.First, there's no filter on the water entering the barrel and initial inflow has a lot of crap that either floats or accumulates at the bottom of the barrels which quickly plugs the spigot. We use a transfer pump to empty the barrels, but the little screens used with hoses quickly plug up as well. We resolved the issue by rigging a sock filter on the intake to get the initial gunk removed. So far that has eliminated sand/gravel/bugs accumulation.Second, we don't get many gentle rains here - lots of short and fast downpours. If the rains are gentle, the unit works well, but a downpour will overwhelm the unit and the downspout backs up. When the downspout is backed up and the barrels are full, the unit can't stop inflow (because the downspout has become filled) . . it will force the water out the overflow on the barrels. So, we added a hoses to divert the overflow water away from the house. That works well for us.We bought three of these and have the same issues with each of them. Not much we can do on the overflow issue, but it would make the unit much more usable adding some kind of filter. So is the unit perfect? no . . but overall, we're satisfied with it and would purchase again. Hope this helps in your decision process.

I researched a lot of diverter options to work with our new rain barrel, and ultimately bought this one based on the reviews and design. Within 24 hours of installation, we had a thunderstorm that almost completely filled my 45 gallon barrel despite a fairly small roof surface feeding into it.Installation went smoothly, though I was fortunate enough to have the exact hole saw necessary (2 1/8" - though some people say they've used tin snips as well). The "funnel" fit snugly in my 2x3 gutter and seems like it will come out easily enough, too, if I need to clean it.At least one reviewer has complained about the funnel clogging, but that's to be expected if you don't put some type of gutter guard in place to keep sticks, leaves and other debris out. I installed a basic wire mesh downspout insert into my gutter, and even after multiple rainstorms, the diverter remains unclogged and working fine. That said, I'm fully prepared to have to clean it out at least every fall as part of winterizing my rain barrel since some crud is always going to make it down the gutter eventually. All in all, I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend this product to other rain-barrel users.
