This is a standard type of fid for use with double braid splicing up to 1/2" line. Instructions are all over the internet, and once you have done it a few times you will work out a system that works for you. These fids are also useful for splicing dynema (different method, but these hollow fids are still helpful).These are as of now a few $ less than the kits from the name brand rope manufacturers, and I see no difference in quality- these are very simple tools.This kit only goes up to 1/2" line, if you need larger you can purchase individual fids in larger sizes. For most running rigging on most sailboats, 1/2" will be plenty big enough. Docklines are another matter- I need 5/8" or 3/4" for my boat. But personally I dislike double braid for docklines and vastly prefer an 8 or 12 plait nylon, which is easy to splice by hand at any size- and these hollow fids are still very helpful when feeding strands through. So while the primary intent is for double braid splicing, they do have other uses.

The fids are nicely shaped, but I’m going to soften the edges some before use. The points are nicely rounded tips, but the hollow ends are quite sharp and potentially damaging. I’m sure a little fine sand paper will buff the cutting sharpness off them though. Doesn’t come will a wire for long splices, but otherwise a nice complete kit that should last for all I’ll ever do.

Disappointed in this kit. The size of the fib should be described by the diameter of rope that fits inside of it. Not the outside diameter of the fib. I needed this for 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2" rope. There is nothing in this kit that a 3/8" synthetic rope will fit inside of.

I needed a 1/2" fid I searched and found these they said their biggest one was 1/2" well I measured the outside of the biggest one and it was 3/8" OUTSIDE they are made of thick metal so the inside was like 1/4" now I had to drive out of my way to return them and order new ones which will set me back 4 or 5 days when all I really wanted was to make a rope to get my boat off my truck
