I like the Ryobi 18v tools and prior to this product have had good luck with them. First use drilled a few holes for a save and it was amazing (1/2 holes).Today went to drill something a bit more heavy duty and was surprised that the unit overheated and was shooting out smoke and hot metal parts from the motor area. It's basically useless now after 4 holes.

This drill is bunk. I was drilling in soft sandstone with 1/2" masonary bits 5" deep. After 2 holes the drill smoked and never worked again. I have a brushless Ryobi hammer drill and it made 6 more holes at just about the same speed and still preforms. Save your money on this cheep SDS. I truly wanted it to preform but its just a bad product. Also the seller never contacted me back after 5 attempts to get a replacement (Midwest Tool Co.).

It's a very light duty hammer drill compare to what it looks like in the picture

Used this to drill through a footer under a wall. II used up two large batteries. The drill got hot so I let it cool between batteries. I drilled a 1/4" hole and then a 3/4" hole and it worked very well.

Very nice hammer drill.I read the reviews, bought it refurbished, checked to make sure it did not get too hot and used it with a Dewal 5/8" bit (recommended - and SDS Pro bit as is this drill). My goal was a large granite boulder...the worst challenge for bits.It got warm, not hot, as I went through four, 3+ amp hour batteries...slowly, several cycles. This is my first SDS drill where I learned that a little less pressure, while slightly moving the drill in a circle, works wonders on creating the dust that is movement of the drill bit down into the granite.I learned from t he reviews not to push it, and didn't, and I was rewarded with success. The feather and wedge approach worked with this drill making the 5/8" holes in a straightforward and "home owner" approach. The rock was huge, but chipped away into a pile through several recharges of the Ni-MH batteries. If you are a professional, then get an SDS with a cord and go at it. If you are like me, with a couple big Riyobi 18V batteries because you already have their nice chainsaw or brush trimmer, then this is what you should add.
