waltham butternut squash seeds for planting outdoor garden

Grow a garden filled with Waltham Butternut Squash, from freshly harvested Cucurbita pepo seeds. Waltham Butternut is an heirloom variety of Winter Squash that produces 10 to 12 inch, oblong fruits. The outer skin is a creamy yellow and its inner flesh is golden yellow / orange. The inner flesh of Waltham Butternut is extremely sweet and stringless, making it one of the best varieties to bake with. The fruits themselves weigh in at roughly 4 to 6 pounds each. The plants will reach a mature height of 12 to 24 inches tall, and will vine outwards, taking up roughly 6 feet of garden space. Harvest your Waltham Butternut Squash in about 95 days.

Squash plants, like pumpkins, are grown as annual plants. Annuals will grow quickly, producing vines, leaves and fruits through the warm months of summer. After harvesting the Squash from its vines, the plants will wilt soon after, with the first frost. Squash plants can be regrown the following season if you manage to save some of the seeds within the Squash itself.

Waltham Butternut is one of the many varieties of Squash that we have to offer. Check out our Squash category for a wide variety of other options available. You might also be interested in our Pumpkins and Gourds as well.

What is the difference between Winter and Summer Squash?

First and foremost, Squash in general, both develop and produce fruits in the summer months, up until early Autumn. The main difference is based upon harvesting, consumption, as well as the use for your Summer or Winter Squash. Summer Squash is best enjoyed when harvested early, while its fruits have a tender skin. While Winter Squash will take up to 50 to 60 percent longer to develop and can be harvest later in the season. Winter Squash fruits, such as Table Queen, Burgess Buttercup, Sweet Meat and Waltham Butternut, will have a thicker outer skin and a sweeter inner flesh, making them perfect for baking and stuffing. Summer Squash, such as Prolific Straightneck, Crookneck, Early white Scallop and Zucchini, are best consumed raw, steamed or cooked.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Squash seeds aren't too fond of being transplanted and are best sown directly in the garden, after all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and other obnoxious weeds that you find. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1" under topsoil, in hills which can be raised 8 inches tall. Check "Germination and Growth" for additional information on spacing.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Squash plants will enjoy the heat of summer and thrive in temperatures that are above 65F. Since Squash is a heavy feeder, the soil should be rich in organic matter, but will also need to be well drained. To improve drainage, it is recommended to add a light compost to any hard, compacted soil in the sowing area. This will prevent the roots from rotting. Water the seeds daily with a mild setting so that the seeds and seedlings are kept moist until germination occurs. Avoid overwatering.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Squash seeds will begin to sprout open in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of 1 to 2 feet tall and can take up 6 feet of garden space. These plants will need a large area to grow outwards and can be spaced by hills or mounds of dirt, rather than rows. As explained above mounds should be 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 8 inches tall. Space each mound at least 6 feet apart from one another. When sprouts become visible, direct the vines outwards towards areas that do not contain other plant life.

Butternut squash is so versatile, so I was looking forward to growing these, and Seeds Needs did not disappoint. Happily, I don't have to waste my time or gas searching the garden center for heirloom seeds, which gives me more time in the garden. Now, as with any packet of seeds I had a few that didn't sprout, but these produced well, and they froze and cooked up wonderfully. One packet is more than I needed for my small garden, and it may just be me, but these tasted better than anything I've bought from the store. The Bottom Line: I will be ordering from Seeds Needs again, the packets are reasonably priced, $4.99 worth the price for a good amount of seeds which are untreated, heirloom and they produce quality squash.

I planted the entire package and got no sprouts. I'm been growing and selling squash for over 20 years. I'm confident I planted correctly, water correctly, and these were bad seeds. Also had the same problem with another package of seeds (melon) from the SAME company. Buyer be warned.

These seeds arrived well packaged, and we were pleasantly surprised to get a total of 32, not just the promised 25. By all accounts, they appear to be hardy and fresh, and we look forward to planting them in the spring. The packaging has clear and helpful instructions on the back, along with a QR code that takes you to the company's website for much more detailed information and to reorder. We will update this review in the spring once they've been planted.

Updated Nov 24 2022:After reporting that only 10 of my 13 seeds had sprouted, 3 days later the remaining 3 sprouted and are growing to catch up with the others. So I’m happy to report an amazing 100% germination. So far so good!Original review Nov 14 2022:The day after I received these seeds two weeks ago, I planted 13 of them as a test. Within a very few days, 10 of the 13 sprouted (the other 3 never did) and now they are already 4 inches tall and look strong and healthy. Only time will tell how well the plants actually do and how tasty the squash will be, but obviously there are many variable factors involved when it comes to gardening.I’m happy with the 77% germination rate I have got so far and since there were actually 31 seeds in the pack, rather than the 25 promised, I’m very satisfied. They also arrived the day after I ordered them and the price is decent, so well worth the buy!

I’ve received these seeds after the planting season, so I can’t attest to their germination rate or the quality for the harvest, but I consider myself very attentive to updating reviews, and I will return to update about how these did in my garden. I’ve ordered seeds from this company before, however, and have had great success with their seed stock. The seeds I just received don’t expire until the end of the next growing season. This squash tends to grow outwards with vines up to six feet long, but I have found I can train them upwards in a carefully tended garden. The fruits are roughly 4-6 pounds when ready and they get a golden hue on the skin. I tend to harvest once the leaves begin to die back.Waltham Butternut Squash is one of my favorite squashes since it is sweet and not very stringy. It keeps very well and lasts stored all winter. I love making soup with it. I cut them in half lengthwise and roast them on a baking pan at 350-degrees for 30-minutes. I then scoop out the flesh into a blender with sautéed onions, roasted carrots, and rice or almond milk, and it makes a fantastic winter soup.

This is a nice seed package of butternut squash. I eat squash whenever I can get it and it's quite expensive and this package has 25 seeds. The value of that is a significant amount. I'm paying around $8-$9 dollars for a cut up squash at Costco. If I times that by 25 we're looking at about $225 worth of squash in this package. This packet is a great way to start planting a very practical garden. We're happy with the packaging and the variety of squash included in the package. Butternut is my favorite. It's sweet and delicious even without any seasoning or sweetener. We're happy that this package is heirloom and non-GMO. We live in South Florida so the planting time is starting soon in the fall. We'll check back to let you know how it goes.
