About this item

  • Single-coil Soundhole Pickup for Acoustic Guitar - Walnut

Seymour Duncan offers three choices in the Woody Series, but all have the commonality of instant mounting and unmounting, along with a great-looking maple cover that will look unobtrusively fantastic on your guitar. More importantly, if you already love the sound of your acoustic, the Woody Series will passively amplify your sound without anything to detract from it. Especially great for singer-songwriters and folk strummers, the Woody Series offer a moderate response that gives you plenty of amplification while allowing your guitar to blend nicely with vocals and other instruments. All Woody Series pickups will fit nearly any acoustic guitar's soundhole, with a radius range from 3.85" to 4.10". They're also priced to fit the budgets of most musicians, and are a much more affordable alternative to buying a mic for acoustic amplification.

To be clear, this review is for the Seymour Duncan SA-3SC Woody SC Acoustic Pickup – Walnut Single Coil. I’ve noticed sometimes reviews here are not congruent with the product shown. With that out of the way…I will start with WOW! If you’re looking for something to easily pop in when you gig, then remove at home, this is the ticket. Simple to install and remove, looks great, sounds great, overall, a fantastic pickup. I’ve been doing solo acoustic gigs for over 35 years, and started off with the old Dean Markley wood pickup. I will say this type has come a long way!I’ve been playing an old Sigma (ya know, a Chinese Martin), installed my first LR Baggs and have been getting incredible sound the past 5 years or so, but these old Sigmas just don’t hold up and I’m not spending cash on a luthier to get it back in shape. Now I bought a Taylor AD17 and I’m not committed to drilling into this one, so I tried the SA-3SC. Gigged with it last night for the first time and I am SO glad I tried it. I got several compliments on the guitar sound.First, know what you are buying here. I saw reviews that said it didn’t work, the volume was too low, had no sound, sounds muddy, and all sorts of issues that had nothing to do with the pickup, and everything to do with not understanding how to use it. This is a passive pickup, meaning no battery or power boost. It is just a sound delivery system. It’s up to you to make it sound how you want it to sound. That’s just part of being a musician. You cannot just plug it into any old amp and expect it to perform. You do have to do some sound man work. You need a preamp or a mixer. I have always treated acoustic pickups as a vocal instrument and went straight into the PA mixer. In my experience, acoustic pickups always seem to sound better through the PA, not an amp. I have always used a powered mixer with a powered speaker, which helps dramatically and solves lots of problems. I did the same with this one and after just a bit of tweaking, it sounds beautiful and every bit as good as the installed LR Baggs I had been using (granted, my LR Baggs would probably sound amazing in my Taylor). Like most sound hole type pickups it can be muddy. But crank the gain, drop the volume, cut the lows and maybe a slight chorus to brighten it up. Picks up any small picking details and holds up for the heavy stuff too. Just know that you are going to have to do a little sound work first, but it's worth it!Installation could not be simpler. I just slid it under my strings onto the rim of the sound hole, then played with the position a bit till I got the tone I wanted. No need for a screwdriver or any of that crap. Non-intrusive, and I do a lot of heavy strumming. I never hit the cable or the pickup. Not an issue. The cable itself is substantial, and long enough for gigs (about 10-15’). Much better than they used to be.The pickup is solid, not overly big, but not some lightweight plastic junk. Feels good in your hand. It comes in a drawstring bag which is nice for transport. I wanted the black one, but it was out of stock, so I ordered the walnut. Actually, a better choice. Looks really nice! This pickup is a great value! Yes, you can buy a more expensive active pickup or have one installed, but for an easily installed and removed, passive pickup, it's pretty amazing! Really, once you dial it in, this is about as simple as it gets, and you won’t have to dip into your tip jar. I’ll be using it for quite some time for sure.

Saludos.

I fitted this to my Ovation Patriot and was easy to fit. As has been said in previous reviews you are likely to need the amp on full gain and volume to hear it! The good thing about that is that the clarity and detail of individual notes comes though nice and crisp with the right tone settings on the amp. No fear of feedback and that is a trade off against the full volume settings. Looks good too and the cable is a good length.

Got this so that my acoustics could have a DI. I HIGHLY recommend running this through a pre-amp pedal or something with a powered gain stage/a little coloring to get it to sound good. It sounds the best of any clip on pickups I've tried stock but it is for sure low output and needs the pre-amp to smooth it out a bit and boost the signal. But other than that I'm very happy with it. It's super easy to install and switch between my guitars!

I hardly ever write reviews. This small piece of equipment is amazing, in my opinion. I didn't want to make any permanent changes to my acoustic, so tried this. I think it sounds awesome. Definitely worth the money!

I have to say I'm very pleased with the quality of this pick up. I'll start by saying I bought this for one reason and that was to electrify my acoustic 12 string. This product does just that. It seemed a little quiet but after putting it through my compressor/sustain pedal it sounded perfect. Its easy to set up. Just simply slip the pickup vertically into the sound hole of the guitar, thanks to the foam edges it sits in nice and tight. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone wanting to convert thier acoustic to an electric. I've had a great experience with this so far. The only issue I can see isn't an issue at the moment but I question the durability of the foam used to attach this pickup to the guitar. I have a feeling that in time it may come loose but only time will tell. I will update this review in a couple of months.

Excellent soundhole pickup. Great sound.Should last a long time without any problems with the quality cable.Always bought Fishman in past, which I really like. But cable on those are flimsy, causing problems. This seems better.Only minus is the high cost of postage overseas, compared to Fishman and Markley versions. A bit excessive.
