This has the most teeth you can get on an 8 speed gear so gives you the lowest gear. On mine I get 1:1 as the main chain wheel is also 34 teeth. There is a double step to the next lowest gear so I do find myself changing up and then down again on some hills. It's good for getting up the really steep hills like the bottom of Cheddar Gourge ie 25%. If you stand up with 1:1 gearing you do need to push down carefully on the pedals and have fairly good balancing to avoid falling sideways at such low speeds. Note the 34T just seems to mean 34 teeth with the T not meaning anything in particular.

Haven't installed it yet but wanted to share some photos of the 11-34T. You'll only see 7 cogs since the 8th one - the smallest - is the also the lock ring. Mainly want to show the jump to the largest cog / lowest gear - the 34T. Just looking at the cassette, it's a big jump between 1st and 2nd gear, and I wonder if I should have stuck with the 32T. I'll try and come back with some impressions after several rides, but thought it would be helpful to just add the photos for others to consider

Seemed like a good cassette until the 1st gear cog bent. (11-34) Bent right where there is an extra cut hole in the arm. The 11-32 does not have this hole. What a shame.

Excellent product, rock solid. I'm so happy to have a 34 on the back now. I installed this for the steep hills I, literally, could not climb before.Cassettes nowadays are generally all the same solid material, no need to spend more than this on a good quality cassette unless you are a contender to win the Tour De France. This is a great solid product and goes on easily if you have the right tool. Don't hesitate, buy this now.

Works great so far. Just riding in the city. Can't say I tested the low 34T gear up a hill yet. However when I had my 107 or whatever the count was link chain on this and on the high gear on the crank and the low gear on the rear and went to shift down to the lowest on the crank while the crank was still on high my bike chain just locked up. In fear of damaging gears or the chain I stopped forcing the petal and set my bike down. I had to up the center gear and after petalling either forward or reverce it freed things up. I'd hate to do this while i'm at racing speeds and did something foolish. It wouldn't be good. I don't know if I need a longer chain or just less teeth on the lowest gear. I'm pretty sure the default 112 link chain was too long for my bike seeing I bought it at 108 links. Anyways you bike people will know more than me honestly I am really new at this.

The final two cogs on this cassette are 26t and 34t. That's a pretty big jump in gears. I hope it shifts as smooth as the rest of the cassette.Updated to 5 stars. Shifts as smooth as anything else even under load. I was expecting the 34t cog to be slower than the smaller 32t ring on my other cassette but it ends up being a wash since I can maintain a higher cadence with this 34t cassette.

This is a great gear combination for those of us who struggle on the uphill climbs. The 34 tooth (old was a 32) low gear works well with the front set at 1-1 and 2-1 (3 gear crank). I have it paired with a Shimano Alivio M411 Hybrid Crankset. The rear stock Derailleur has a long cage which allows smooth shifting for this set. It doesn't like to go to 3-1, but that's expected since the chain angle is so drastic. Adjustments were minimum, the biggest change was to accommodate the 34 tooth. I do not run the original rear Shimano derailleur chain idler gears. I've installed 11 tooth bearing idler gears which perform much better than the bushing type.

I changed out the rear cog to one with this 34 teeth - $18 (instead of the 32t that comes with the bike). I am ever so glad I did this; the 29er would help take me beyond the MTB (26er), which I had before, but the extra 2 teeth got me up some Colorado rocky mountain paths without having to stop to rest as before. Going over 6" rocks on the ascent didn't stop me! The rear derailleur work flawlessly with this bigger cog, no adjustment necessary.
