It HAS to be connected to the battery for all functions to work. I was in a hurry when I connected this to the tail lights and waited to get it connected to the battery. Tail and turn signals all worked just fine so I wasn't concerned. But then noticed while on my next ride that my cruise control wouldn't set. Took a break early in my trip and got it connecting it to the battery and the cruise started working again. Great product. Easy to install.

Installed easily with enough wire to mount everything where you needed to but not too much. The color code for the trailer wire was kind of random and had to be tested. Minor problem.

Appears to be good quality. I went through 2 of the Rivco harnesses on my 2018 Goldwing, and both had the same problem of poor wire to connector crimping. Show Chrome is better made, in my opinion. I would recommend it.
