This comes with a D ring handle and a side handle that lets you choose which one is best. It is heavy duty and after awhile it can get hot at motor, more noticeable on lower speed settings. This is normal because the slower setting does not allow vane fan to evacuate the heat as compared to higher speed more air flow. The bag and extra set of brushes for the motor are great. The noise is loud as with other buffers of similar size so wear hearing protection. When running on the 600 rpm it is best to take breaks and allow to cool down and it will extend the life of the motor. Never have I experienced any burning smell or smoke coming from the motor.

Bought this to do my large boat because my snap on is heavy. This does weight a little less but works well and the only thing I will add is when you touch the side where the brushes mount you will get a shock and a good one!

Several reviewers here were disappointed that this machine was louder than expected, or complained that it ran hot. One even complained that Shurhold includes a spare set of brushes, for free. Here's the straight scoop.I own two of these and two of the 'other' high-end buffers. This buffer is virtually identical to the highest rated pro tools (dewalt, milwaukee etc.). It really is intended for PROFESSIONAL users. This means that it will be just as loud (~84 decibels!) and draw just as much current (12-Amps!) as other professional machines. This also means you will need to use hearing protection, just like the others. This also means that after a couple HUNDRED HOURS of heavy usage, you will need to replace the brushes, just like the others.Likewise, because all high-powered motors that run on alternating current will overheat if they don't get enough voltage/current, this means that you can't just use any old 14-16 gauge extension cord. The voltage drop across an undersized extension cord will cause the motor to overheat and (eventually) fail.If you understand these concepts, or if you just read the owners manuals for this and similar professional tools, you will find this is universally true.If you buy this buffer, you will need three things:(a) the upper-body strength and mass to handle the torque it makes...(b) hearing protection to shield your ears from 84 decibels and...(c) a source of electricity that can deliver an minimum or 12-amps @ 115v -- at the FAR end of any extension cord you will be using. Typically, this means a 12 gauge or preferably a 10 gauge cord, which you will NOT find at Wal-mart!Shurhold's other buffers (like the Dual-Action 3100) use MUCH less amperage and are suitable for casual or occasional light work. I own a couple of those too...but they can't handle a hundred or so square feet of moderately oxidized gelcoat.I'm just wanting to save some folks here the time and trouble of buying and returning one of these.Great tool for an informed buyer!

I'm using this to sand the pontoons on my boat. It's working very well and it is easy to use.

This item is atrocious and disappointing to say the least!! I did not open and use it right away, once I opened it, I noticed they had added an extra set of motor brushes....now I know why! I would return this, however, because I did not open it right away and was unaware of the issues it has, the return option has expired. It wobbles as if the shaft is bent and the noise coming from the motor is just atrocious! This is suppose to be "Professional Grade"!I have had another polisher that I have used for over 20 years and it's still working just fine! The older one purrs like a kitten.Update: I just spoke with a rep. from the Shurhold company. They are willing to have the item shipped back to them and looked at to see if this item was faulty. I very much appreciate this and will update on the outcome.

I have not used it yet. Seems to be well made. My observation right now is that the buffing pads and applicator pads all seem to be too small to cover the backing plate. I have about 1/4" of the backing pad showing all around the circumference and I'm concerned about this bare edge cutting against the hull surface of my boat. Is there a smaller backing plate that I should be looking at or should I look at getting 7" buffing pads and applicators that will fit. The red micro fiber pad slides over the backing plate just fine. Not sure why they recommended the 6 1/2" pads for this machine.
