About this item

  • Hex nut tightens from the side with a wrench, enabling use when there is limited space above the nut
  • 316 stainless steel provides strength and better corrosion resistance than 18-8 stainless steel
  • Plain surface has no finish or coating
  • Meets ASME B18.2.2 and ASTM F594 specifications

The 316 stainless steel hex nut has a plain finish and meets American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME B18.2.2 and American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM F594 specifications. It has six flat sides that a wrench can grip to turn from the side, enabling use when there is no space above the nut. The 316 stainless steel grade provides strength and offers better corrosion resistance than 18-8 stainless steel, especially in marine environments. The material may be slightly magnetic.

Nuts are internally threaded fasteners that are used with bolts and threaded rods and studs to connect components. Several different nut styles fit a variety of application and installation requirements. Some styles, such as hex nuts, acorn nuts, flange nuts, and coupling nuts, must be tightened with a tool. Others, such as eye nuts, thumb nuts, and wing nuts, can be tightened by hand. Some nuts have a self-locking mechanism, such as a nylon patch or distorted threads, that makes them suitable for applications with a high amount of vibration.

When I first received these I was frankly suspicious: they almost looked like polished aluminum. But the weight 'felt OK' for the size of these 3/8"-24 nuts (which measure 9/16" across flats; 0.330" thick).Trying to be a bit more quantitative...Looking up the density of 316 SS, I came up with a value of 8.027 g / cc - and decided to do a weight / displacement check (thanks Archimides!) - using a sensitive scale and a precision graduated cylinder. Ten of the nuts weighed 68.9 grams and displaced (as close as I could read it) ~8.5 cc. Now 68.9 / 8.5 - 8.11 g / cc: so I call that "very close" (within a small margin of error for an 'at home' check - without putting them through actual laboratory testing). The nuts are also properly marked (per ASTM F594) as "F594G": that is the correct designation for a 316SS nut between 1/4" and 5/8" in size. These also seem like an excellent value given the fine finish: only about 27 cents each.Highly recommended!

Theses are great! I only had to tap them to the size I needed. The right tap for this type of steel is pricey but it is what to be expected.

These were to hold a 5/8" steel rod for boat rollers. They seem to hold the vertical rod well. They are mounted on top and bottom of a plate.
