Love the smart plug upgrade! I bought just the cord end for a spare cable I keep at the house. Good directions and easy install with all the required fasteners. All you need is a good cable cutter, wire stripper and some hand/dish soap!

My experience wasn’t great. I had issues with the connection, as it didn’t seem to fit securely, which was concerning. To make matters worse, it actually melted during use, prompting me to switch back to my original locking 30 amp plug. While I appreciate the concept behind the SmartPlug design, my experience with this particular connector has been disappointing. I would recommend being cautious and possibly sticking with more traditional options until these issues are addressed.

I bought in to the Smart Plug system after seeing multiple advertisements and YouTube videos on the subject. Since the Smart Plug equipped cords are SUPER expensive, I purchased the BF30 connector and modified my existing twist plug cord. The install is fairly straightforward. The toughest part is threading the thick cord through the receptacle. They suggested coating the cord with liquid dish soap which seemed to work well for me. All in all, it took me about 30 minutes to cut off the twist end and install the Smart Plug connector. This system is way better and less hassle to plug and unplug from the camper. Look at some of the YouTube videos and you will find it is safer as well.

Like other reviewers, I had a problem with my old-style 30 amp power cord to my boat, a 2006 Regal 2860. On the boat end, it was quite difficult to plug in the cord; it’s was hard to line up and to secure. Then, there was an apparent bad connection and the cord overheated and melted to the connection point. Fortunately, the breaker tripped and there was no fire. When I discovered the SmartPlug online, I knew I had found a solution. The SmartPlug connector was delivered promptly and included everything needed to install it. I wouldn’t say the process is easy; rather, I would say it is straightforward. The instructions are complete and easy to follow. With some care and patience, I feel like I did a good job. I’m sure a pro wouldn’t take as long as I did but it took me a little over a half hour to make the modification to my old cord. Now, I can easily make a sure connection to the boat end - which also needs to be modified with the SmartPlug inlet. I did let a pro do that job for me. Now, I am confident that my shore power connection is safe.

After having seen so many burned/overheated twist style connectors on other people's boats, I figured they were (obviously) doing something wrong because that would NEVER happen on my boat... Then it happened on my boat. A brand new twist style female end melted and the male end charred. Then it happened to a friend of mine's boat.At that point I decided that I needed to do something better, and dang if the SmartPlugs aren't the best thing since sliced bread.I've installed the male end onto the boat and have put female ends onto three cables - one 50' for shore power, one short one for my generator with a "standard 110v" plug on the other end, and one as a pigtail with a twist connector on the other end - incase I ever have to use someone else's cable that has a twist connector (the last one is a sacrificial cable...)Installing the ends is a bit of a pain, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad and the results are fantastic. Is it worth the price? Yes! They are not cheap, but if I keep my boat from burning to the waterline, I've saved money.

After replacing my NMEA connectors over and over again, I switched to Smart Plugs, which are much sturdy and have better design. One star is missing due to the assembly that needs a lot of patience and lube. The black sleeve is very hard to pass thru the connector, even with the tool provided. After several minutes of head scratching, if figured out that I was doing it according to the instruction, I only had to pull much harder. Easier with a buddy pulling the cord while pulling the connector over the sleeve.
