Not my preferred art material. I was expecting these to have a more prominent and stronger look but they don't. They have a light look so the markings don't contrast well with paper. And personally I prefer a strong dark lines to make my art.

I really enjoyed working these. I found the quality really great. they didn't break apart on my hands or anything. it's a good well made product. I like the price. I seen charcoal prices a bit cheaper and other a bit higher. but I mean it's kinda hard to mess up charcoal and how much do you wanna pay for burnt ashes.I like and kept the little tray thats inside the box. came in handy for putting things way. I believe they were all the same level of hardness. some sets come in different hardnesses. But to be honest I never pay attention to that and usually the marking rub off anyways. so that really doesn't matter to me.I've tried the compressed and the vine. along with a few other items from this brand. I never had any issues with them or their product. great stuff they know what they are doing.

Good for learning or practicing charcoal drawing, these are relatively small sticks of compressed charcoal. They are not as soft as one would expect from "extra-soft" sticks. They are relatively hard and able to draw a sharp, fine black line with the edge, a softer line using the end, or an even lighter shaded area with the side of the sticks. They don't really blend well. Once you've moved it, it's difficult to move it further, and virtually impossible to rub off completely with a finger or blending stick. You can remove quite a bit with an eraser to cut in highlights or remove small mistakes.

The charcoal came in a plastic tray with a plastic cover and then in a box. All the pieces were even, smooth, and solid. I used a smudger for blending and the sharp edge of the charcoal if I wanted a clean, dark edge. There was nothing on the stick that got caught or crumbly on the paper. The paper was a multimedia drawing paper with a bit of tooth. The charcoal didn't smudge or come off when my cat decided to take a sit and then roll around on the sample piece I was working on. I was really satisfied with the application.

I usually use hard pencils and very deliberate lines when I draw, so it takes me a long time to really make progress. I got these to practice gestural studies and other quick sketches, as a way to get me out of my usual habits. These small (and they are small... just shy of 4 inches) charcoal sticks work well for that. Setting a short timer and then moving on to the next pose, using these to draw and shade with? Great way to shake things up.These are soft, so they smear easily (and I say that as a plus), so you can blend and blur easily, as well. Definitely worth working with, and I will keep practicing in this style with these.

I got these for an art class that I'm about to take. My original plan was to break them in half and use them. However, I tried one after they arrived and a whole one fits nicely in my hand and allows me to control it pretty well. With a light grip they don't leave a lot of marks on my hand, although I imagine that will change once I start doing larger drawings. From what I can see so far they have a nice "tone" (my term) and I feel like they'll be easy to work with.If I manage to produce something that I'm proud of I'll post it here for all to see...I recommend them.

This is my favorite charcoal to work with. It’s the best company when it comes to types of charcoal too.

This charcoal works great. It moved smoothly on the paper and there wasn't a lot of drop off when using. It felt good in my hand as I drew. The charcoal transferred onto the paper well too and I didn't have to go back as much as I do normally with more inexpensive charcoal. I would highly recommend.
