This ph probe is not a soil ph tester. Instead, it is a ph tester that can be used to measure the ph of soil, among many other things, if the user has the background knowledge to do so. It is really a science project, and requires calibration before use. I worked in an actual lab in college, so I was able to make this thing work, but I wouldn’t expect the inexperienced person to be able to use it properly. Calibration requires the user to find and buy distilled water, which I found at Safeway for $1.49.I had to research soil ph testing to find a method to test soil for ph. There are no instructions included in the packaging to guide the user to test soil, even though this tester is advertised as a soil tester. The method I found on the interweb required the use of a digital scale to weigh out 100 grams of soil. I doubt most users have a scale accurate enough to work, so plan on buying one at around $50.I think most users will prefer a ph meter that is easier to use.

Read carefully on how to calibrate this device. Not hard, but is important. I love this ph meter!

When I first put this together I was able to calibrate and use it and use it to test water samples. After a month of storage ( with storage solution), I tried to use it again and the pH valve did not change regardless of solution. After a while of jiggling the probe (about an hour), and making sure the air bubbles were out, I was finally able to get the pH value to move. It seemed to work well after calibration so I just marked it us to user ignorance. This I made sure that the storage cup was full and stored the probe with the unit sitting upright. A few weeks later I tried to use it again and again there was no change on the meter. I was not able to revive it. I have given up. I don't like to give bad ratings but this pH meter is not reliable.

This is one tough tool. I’ve gone through a few other ph testors they break so easily. This comes with an aluminum spearhead tip! Nothing will break this tip! Awesome job guys!!

It is accurate and easy to use. Has all that you need to calibrate. Have used it for a month and have not needed to calibrate. Includes extra storage solution and extra calibration solution.

I have a lot of uses for a pH test kit - from garden to wine and vinegar making. This tool seems designed to handle the wide range I need. I have used various cheaper, quick solutions and not been satisfied with the results. That said, with increased functionality, one can expect a bit more work and knowledge to get the intended results. If you have done any pH testing you are already familiar with calibration needs and the solutions to perform the process, this uses the same principles; but the higher sophistication yields results that I feel were more accurate than I was getting with cheaper "easier" methods. The kit is well designed for long term use and easy to keep all the needed components on hand. I have never had a problem getting replacements for the solution packs, so using this kit correctly shouldn't poses any problems over the long term with good results. Very pleased.
