The wireless receiver of Sony’s UWP-D series (urx-p40) can be attached to camcorders or interchangeable-lens cameras that have an MI (multi-interface) shoe* using the smad-p5 MI audio shoe adaptor eliminating the need for connecting cables. By using the MI shoe adaptor, audio signals can be transmitted from the wireless receiver to a camera. In addition, the wireless receiver can get power from the camera and the camera can control power on/off, unifying power management. In addition, the combination of urx-p40 and smad-p5 supports Digital audio interface which delivers high sound quality with low noise by direct digital audio recording. It also achieves advanced integration with the camcorders and can show audio information on the viewfinder for enhanced usability in the field. This is a critical adapter for your kit when you are using digital sony adapters. It's an interesting thing that they don't include it with the device because you would to best to use it.This adapter is usable with every single a7/9/1 camera that Sony has released along with some RX cameras that have the MI standard hot shoe. There are two settings on the camera. Be sure you use the right one! If you use an older camera, including something like an FS5 or a7s (mark 1), be sure you have the dial set to analog or you won't get any sound. For newer cameras you likely will use the digital switch. ONE of the two settings will work if you have an MI shoe.I find this adapter to be reliable even with tough use. It's not claimed to be weatherproof but in moist conditions it's been pretty good.Being a hotshoe, be sure you have it seated correctly. There is no safety latch on the back side of the adapter to protect from detachment if something pushes against it FROM THE FRONT. Even if you torque the shoe with the clamp, there still is a danger with this, however minimal. It's the only disadvantage to this vs using cables in my view.So yes, using this is as wonderful as you think. It supplies power from the main power of the camera to the receiver so you can worry about one less thing on your shoot. Happy shooting!
