Product Description

A full-frame24mm to 240mm zoom range allows this one lens to cover an extensive variety of shooting situations with 10x effective zoom range, making it ideal for landscape, snapshots, portraits and travel where reducing luggage is a priority. The ability to switch from wide angle to telephoto without having to change lenses also means that more of those fleeting moments that make great shots will be captured. The advanced optics include 5 a spherical elements and 1 ED glass element, achieving high-quality performance in a compact overall design. An advanced linear motor drives the focusing mechanism for quick, smooth response throughout the extended zoom range. Handheld telephoto shots and low-light photography are facilitated by built-in Optical Steady Shot (OSS) image stabilization. Like all other FE lenses, the design is dust and moisture resistant. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills. 2015 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. Additional Features

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Aspherical lens elements

Internal focusing

Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.

Lens-based optical image stabilization

If you get this lens first for your camera, it will spoil you with how much it can zoom in to things. That, and every single other lens I've used has had the focus ring at the end, instead of near the camera body. I use this lens a lot, but often on a tripod or supported in some way. Sometimes I forget just how heavy it is and try to record handheld video with it; it's a challenge. If you're going to go somewhere with a tripod and you don't know how close or far things are going to be (or just know you don't want to be changing lenses for each wildly different difference) then this is a superb single-lens option.

I use the Sony A7RII. This lens works great on this camera. The f-stops go accordingly: 24mm f3.5 --- 40mm f4.5 --- 60mm f5.0 --- 70mm f5.6 --- 105mm f6.3 --- 240mm f6.3. Although not exact that is the positions that you’ll get the f-stops occurring.I understand that this lens isn’t the sharpest out there and they are probably correct about that but what I see on the camera and PC is very impressive. Unless you’re a pixel peeper it will be somewhat difficult to see the difference with the naked eye but for my purposes, this lens has excellent sharpness outdoors. I say outdoors because indoors the picture does get noticeable degradation in picture quality but that is the case regardless of the lens you use depending on low light conditions. It is understood that the Sony 24-240 is not too well suited for low light conditions but in my initial tests inside with only incandescent lights I find that the quality is not bad even at an ISO setting of 3200. In that setting, indoors, I find this lens is still pretty decent but how many people shoot indoors. I would think that most people do their photography outside in daylight hours which is another story for, then, you can expect the quality of your photos to go up tremendously. I know mine does. For me, I love to take a photo of the moon now and then. Doing so with this lens is totally acceptable. It may not do as good a job as some of the others but for my purposes it is great. Although this lens is rated at 240mm it is possible, at least with Sony A7RII, to get a focal length of 360mm with this same lens. How? Simply go to your camera settings (this may be different in other Sony models), the one that looks like a gear, and choose file option titled, ‘APS-C/Super 35mm’ and set that to ‘ON’. Doing so will treat this FULL FRAME lens as if you had a CROP lens on it and so the camera sees the lens, not as a 240mm full-frame but a 360mm crop sensor. Although in crop mode you can only shoot JPG, not RAW, you can still get a decent picture of the moon or other distant objects that are too far.I noticed in one post a gentleman said that the mount was flimsy in that it had a loose fit. Unless that is a manufacturing defect mine fit just as snug as all my other lenses so no problem there. As for picture quality, I heard several folks say that the photos were either blurry or not up to standards as far as being sharp. Like I said earlier, even though this lens may not be the best, I find the one I have to be quite sharp and not nearly as bad as what the other folks are saying in their respective reviews. Also, this lens is a very good all-around go-to lens. Instead of carrying several lenses around and replacing them when needed, you can do it all with this lens. You have your selection of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, 100mm, 150mm, and 240mm. If you’re like me, one who takes photos for pleasure rather than a professional photographer who makes their living off of photography, then this lens is more than adequate for 97% of my needs.Overall, I am pleasantly satisfied with this lens. It’s especially good to have when you need a longer focal length that will enable you to bring stuff up closer when the need arises. And, if by chance, I need something with a wider aperture such as f1.8 or lower I can always fall back on the lens I have on hand that accommodates for that. Since I rarely shoot indoors, I find that I don’t need those other lenses all that often.

I have a business photographing cars for online publication. I usually shoot medium telephoto shots of the exterior and then close up wide angle shot of the interior, engine compartment and the underneath. This lens makes it easy to do it all with one lens. I use a Sony A7R3 camera body and variety of Sony lenses, but the one that gets used the most is this Sony 24-240mm lens. It is sharp, versatile, compact and robust. The only downsides are its weight, its maximum aperture is a bit slow, and the focusing ring is stiff (but starting to loosen up). If, like me, you are working with a limited budget, this one lens would be a great choice. I also recommend getting the iShoot Lens Collar Tripod Mount Ring Support Bracket Holder for Sony FE 24-240mm lens. It's a high-quality, modestly priced, accessory for the 24-240mm lens, and a must have if you shoot telephoto images on a regular basis.

After 2 days of trying everything I could think of to get a good image , I returned it.Unable to acquire a sharp image with this lens no matter what the setting used in my A7II.My copy of it was awful. I have a sony 55-210 lens that I used on my A6000. When I use it on my A7II the images are always sharp. I will continue to use my adapter with my canon L lens 70-200 L this combo produces excellent images.I have used a lot of sony products and have always been satisfied with their products but not this one.The price is $1299.00 the price should be 129.90 in addition when I returned it to Amazon I had to pay to return it.With the insurance it cost me $58.33. Amazon tells me that they will refund up to $3.99 towards the return charges.I am forced to give it one star.

I wasn't expecting much when I bought this lens because it has a fairly mixed bag in terms of reviews on other sites. But honestly, after trying it for a few days, I don't understand the hate this lens has. Many photography YouTuber reviewers and users on some of the more technical photography gear websites talk about this lens like it's a bad kit lens. Far from it!After I upgraded to a full-frame camera, I realized that my budget was going to limit how many lenses I could own. One of the primes I bought was a thousand bucks. Another was six hundred bucks. If you want to get into the best zoom lenses, they approach three thousand dollars. If you take portraits for print marketing and blow the images up large enough to put on the side of a bus, I'm sure you'll find flaws with the sharpness of this lens. But when I tested it straight-up next to my 28mm and 55mm primes, I found it to be an excellent lens, almost as sharp as both, less expensive, and certainly a lot more versatile. This will be my "around-town" lens, my "run-and-gun" lens, and my "go-to" lens.By the way, if you're just looking for an insane value in a zoom lens, look no further. Not only is this a very powerful zoom lens, but I was shocked to see how stable it becomes on my Sony a7iii. As I'm zooming in, it's bouncing all over the place. But once you squeeze the shutter button, the OSS turns on and it's like the hand of God reaches down and grabs the barrel. Solid as a rock for usable pictures even at maximum zoom. I love it.One warning: This is a hefty lens, it's got some weight to it, and so be aware of that if you're going to lug it around on a long trip. But I think the versatility is worth the weight.
