Doing PM on a double axle trailer. I focused on rim size and neglected to consider hole pattern which was discovered to be wrong when they arrived. Fortunately was able to clean up existing drum surfaces and used internals to replace an existing brake set that was bad. So 3 internals for spares and 4 drums that I cannot use…considering making a bird bath out of them.

I ordered this kit to replace the old brakes on my 16 foot Big Tex trailer. I am not a mechanic so instructions or a tip sheet would have been helpful. When I went to install them I quickly discovered that they sent the wrong drums. They sent 5 X 5” instead of 5 x 5.5”. I contacted the company and they quickly sent the correct drums.Installation was straight forward. I was worried when I road tested the trailer. The brakes were very weak. The auto-adjust mechanism was not awesome so I manually adjusted them. They were still weak so I kept driving and braking. After about 20 miles or this the brakes seated in and are working well… a little too well… I had to tone down my brake controller a lot because they kept locking up.I have no complaints and I recommend them without reservation.

Ok, I bought these to put on a Lamar tandem 14ft utility trailer that I use to mainly haul 2 - four wheelers which, i believe, are the heaviest I have hauled. Trailer is rated for something like 3990 lbs gvwr but the trailer itself weighs 1450 lbs.. leaving 2,540lbs for cargo weight. I have only added 1 set of these brakes to the front tandem axle. With about 1600+ lbs worth of 4 wheelers on there, it has no issue shutting the trailer down when I need to lean on the brakes a little. I use a Tekonsha P3 brake controller as well. Once I properly installed the brakes and were initially adjusted, these brakes have performed as they should. I have several hundred miles on them as it currently stands. Please note, that this trailed was bought new with no brakes as it wasn't required by law. But I added them cause I didn't like the way the weight was pushing me when I needed to lean onto the brakes from higher speeds. Installation was a breeze for the brakes and the wiring was just as simple. I am technically inclined but this is my first trailer brake job and must say it was fun and rewarding to add brakes for a total of about 190.00 (due to wiring and connections needed to complete the unit). I retained the 4 prong plug as an option as again, the brakes are not required, so i just used a junction box to make all the connections. One thing to note is that after replacing the simple axle wheel hub with these drum electric brakes and put the wheel back on, the wheel did not stick out any with the drum brake being on. It lines up just like it did before I put the brakes one. I don't have a picture of that but when I look down the side of my truck and eyeball the alignment of the front and rear wheels on the trailer, the sides of the tires align as normal. I must say I see people paying between 400 and 500 bucks to put on electric self adjusting brakes, run the wires, add the connections just for 1 axle. I paid only about 190 total for all of mine. $150 for the brake kit, $15 for a the 5 wires needed to run for Left Signal, Right Signal, Ground, 12v to brakes and Brake lights, $8 or bucks for a junction box, 10 bucks or so the 7 pole connector. So right around 200.00 and it is the same professional installation procedure as a shop. If you are mechanically/technically inclined, this will be a cinch to install and literally save you 300.00 plus bucks to add self adjusting brakes to your trailer. 100% worth it IMHO. OH and the guys at Southwest Supply was VERY helpful on ensuring I was buying the right brakes by asking what type of trailer and axles was on my trailer first. Do your research on your own trailer first if you attempt to buy and install these. One big thing to ensure you have is the mounting flange on the axle itself.. I didn't have to pay shipping as they are local to my location so i just when there and did a customer pickup. I seriously hope you found this useful information and good luck if you decide to take on this job. Once you have all the parts at hand, installation is about maybe 2 to 3 hours from start to finish if you don't run into any snags along the way.
